Who Is Dina in The Last of Us?
Dina is a key supporting character in The Last of Us Part 2 video game and TLOU Season 2. Dina worked as a patrol person in the community led by Maria in Jackson Town, Wyoming.
She met Ellie and became her friend after Joel brought the girl back to the town, having lied to her about the Fireflies. Dina used to be Jesse’s girlfriend, another member of the Jackson community, but they broke up right before the events of Part 2 kicked off.
Later, when there was a festive occasion in a church, Ellie and Dina danced together and exchanged a kiss, which marked the beautiful beginning of their relationship. Therefore, when Ellie goes on her retaliation mission to Seattle to avenge Joel’s death, Dina, her newfound love interest, accompanies her to help her exact revenge on Abby.
Who Plays Dina in The Last of Us Season 2?
The second season is confirmed to only adapt the first half of The Last of Us Part 2 video game. So, we will spend most of our time with Ellie and Dina on their quest for revenge. While Bella Ramsey continues to play Ellie, Isabela Merced, who recently starred in Alien: Romulus, has joined the The Last of Us Season 2 cast to play Dina.
If you are wondering which actress lent her voice to Dina in the TLOU Part 2 game, it was done by Shannon Woodward. Shannon also did the motion capture work for Dina, while the character was modeled after the American actress Cascina Caradonna.
Dina’s Backstory in The Last of Us Video Game
Even in the game, we learn only a little about Dina’s past through her conversation with Ellie. She is estimated to have been born between 2015-2018, which also confirms that she was in her early 20s when she met Ellie. Dina lost her mother when she was just a kid, but fortunately, she had her elder sister, Talia, by her side. However, Talia was killed by an unknown character when she was raising Dina alone.
After losing her family, Dina traveled to Wyoming and discovered Maria’s community in Jackson Town. She joined this community sometime before Ellie and Joel rejoined and became one of their patrolmen. We expect HBO’s live-action adaptation to expand upon Dina’s origin story in TLOU Season 2.
What Happens to Dina in The Last of Us?
Dina joins Ellie on her quest for revenge after the two get into a relationship. Dina assists Ellie in taking down the members of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and continues to track down Abby. However, Dina begins to experience the signs of pregnancy during the payback mission. It is then revealed that Dina is pregnant with Jesse’s child, so she remains at the abandoned theatre for the rest of the story.
Dina helps treat Ellie’s wounds whenever she can but eventually loses Jesse after Abby shoots him in the end. When Ellie and Abby engage in a brutal fight, Dina helps her partner but is easily overwhelmed by Lev and Abby. Fortunately, Lev saved Dina’s life by stopping Abby when the latter tried to kill her in the heat of the moment.
After surviving this, Ellie and Dina move to a farm in Wyoming, and the couple begins to raise the newborn kid in The Last of Us 2. However, when Tommy reminds Ellie about unfinished business with Abby, she leaves her newfound family even when Dina asks her to give up on this mission.
At the end of The Last of Us Part 2, it is implied that Dina and her kid have left the farm and moved back to Jackson Town. So, we are left without answers for Dina’s current status and whether she will continue to patch things up with Ellie.
So, Dina survives in the end but loses her partner who used to be so hellbent on this revenge quest. We have to wait and see if the showrunners are going to make any changes to Dina’s character arc in The Last of Us TV series.
