Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Joel Miller from The Last of Us won millions of hearts with his flawed yet relatable personality. And that moment shapes Ellie’s revengeful journey in the TLOU Part 2 game. However, while TV show enthusiasts know which episode their beloved hero dies, those who haven’t watched it yet might wonder when it happens. So, let’s find out the episode in which Joel dies in The Last of Us TV series.
Spoiler Warning:
This post includes spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 video game and Season 2 TV series, so proceed with caution.
In Which Episode of The Last of Us Does Joel Die?

In The Last of Us TV show, Joel Miller is killed in Season 2, Episode 2, titled “Through the Valley.” This episode features the brutal death of Joel (Pedro Pascal), the brave survivalist and the protagonist of the series, at the hands of Abby.
Since the start, Joel has been the one to take all the damage to protect his loved ones, especially Ellie, whom he was initially tasked to deliver to the Fireflies. However, things changed when he started seeing his own daughter in Ellie. After losing Sarah at the beginning of the outbreak, Joel lost his purpose in life, and Ellie entered his life as a ray of hope.
Video game fanatics already knew that The Last of Us Season 2 would feature the gut-wrenching death sequence, but they didn’t think it would be in the second episode. Given the popularity of the character and the actor, every fan hoped the death would happen in the latter half in the HBO series.
However, it seems many forget that the second game was all about Ellie’s quest, and keeping Joel alive for so long wouldn’t have made sense. Well, in the TLOU Part 2 game, Joel meets his dark fate within a couple of hours, but the TV series allowed fans to watch Pedro Pascal for a little while longer.
TLOU Season 2 Episode 2 – Ellie’s Revengeful Journey Now Begins

Abby isn’t a serial killer or someone who kills people for no reason. She is a daughter whose father (Jerry Anderson) was killed by Joel, and she just wants to get justice for her dad. Was her father a bad guy? No, he was a surgeon who wanted to create a cure to save humanity from the Cordyceps virus, and for that, he needed Ellie’s immunity. However, before he could perform the surgery, we saw Joel intervene, slaughter every Fireflies member, starting with Jerry. He didn’t even bat an eye or turn around to see the doctor’s face.
If Abby wanted, she could have killed Dina and Ellie instantly, but she put Dina to sleep and left after killing Joel, leaving Ellie injured. Well, that was the biggest mistake she made. As shown in the episode, Ellie says, ‘I’m gonna kill you.’
Abby doesn’t take her words seriously, but video game fans know what that means. Ellie will chase Abby now, making The Last of Us way darker than anyone would have thought.
