Wednesday: Thing’s Backstory Finally Revealed; Whose Hand Is It?

Thing has been extremely important for the Addams family since the beginning. In Wednesday Season 1, Gomez trusted the disembodied hand and sent him to spy on his daughter. Later, Thing accompanied Wednesday and Enid Sinclair in every challenge that they faced. So, Thing has been the ‘handservant’, whom the family took in as one of their family members. And no wonder, Thing never failed to go beyond his limits to serve them. However, every fan was curious to know who the disembodied hand belonged to, and Wednesday Season 2 finally provided an answer.

Whose Hand Is Thing in Wednesday?

Wednesday Season 2 final episode revealed that Thing is the severed hand of Isaac Night, the childhood friend of Gomez Addams and brother of Tyler’s mother. Isaac’s hand was severed by Morticia when he tried to kill Gomez to cure his sister. However, when the hand severed from Isaac’s body, the Addams family adopted him as a servant and named him ‘Thing’.

In the concluding moments when Wednesday showed up in the wilderness to save Pugsley, Thing accompanied her. However, the poor hand gets captured in a glass box by Tyler. That’s when Isaac Night, the villainous entity, reveals that the hand belongs to him. He captures Thing and reattaches him to his right hand. Following that, Isaac buries Wednesday under the skull tree.

Isaac used the right hand to choke Wednesday in the final episode of Season 2. However, Thing, being the loyal handservant of the family, starts resisting Isaac. He also landed a few punches on Isaac’s face before ripping Isaac’s artificial heart out of his chest. Despite being his right hand, Thing chose the Addams family, who never made him feel like less than a family member.

Ever since Wednesday premiered on Netflix, Thing became the core of Wednesday’s journey. It has accompanied the young girl everywhere and helped her on several occasions. So, it wouldn’t have made sense to let the Thing leave the story this quickly. In a way, it was nice to see the origin story of the Thing, but in the end, it was the right choice to give the Hand consciousness so that it could go against its rightful owner.
