The Penguin Episode 4 Ending Explained: How Did Sofia Kill Her Family?

If we talk about acting excellence, I don’t know about you but Cristin Milioti’s acting has left me speechless in The Penguin, especially in Episode 4. In this episode, when Sofia fades out after being injured, she has a flashback of Arkham Asylum and we get to see what happened to her there. The way she has acted that out is insanely good and deserves appreciation. However, by the end of this episode, we see that Sofia is now what you can call “unhinged” and does something to her family. So, did Sofia Falcone kill her family? And if she did why did Sofia spare Johnny Viti and Gia?

After Sofia found out that even Oz had been betraying her all this time, something in her snapped. When she is saved by Julian Rush, we can see that she has snapped and her new beginning means something sinister. She crashes her family dinner where she is not welcome. She confronts her family for giving statements of her being mentally ill to Arkham Asylum and tells them that now she is going to start afresh. Her family probably thought that Sofia meant that she would take that flight to Sicily and leave.

However, this was not the case, Sofia wanted revenge for everything she went through for 10 years in Arkham Asylum. To get her vengeance for the pain she has been through, Sofia used poisonous gas to kill almost all of her family leaving only Johnny Viti and Gia as far as we know.

Why Sofia Did Not Kill Johnny Viti?

The only reason why Sofia might not have killed Johnny Viti is probably to make him a strategic asset. For Sofia to take over the Falcone crime family’s business operations, she needs someone with contacts and connections and since Johnny is an underboss, he could prove to be a great and also disposable asset to put Sofia in power. After she is established as the representative of the Falcone family and its only boss, she will probably kill off Johnny.

Why Did Sofia Not Kill Gia Viti, the Little Girl?

Sofia not killing Gia demonstrates that Sofia is not completely insane and has a hint of humanity in her as well. She killed people who deserved it in her eyes and since Gia is just a child, she has nothing to do with what happened to Sofia. However, there could be another angle to this, Sofia, saved Gia’s life so she could use her as leverage to make sure that Johnny Viti does not go against her or try to run away. So, let’s wait and see what happens next.
