Severance Season 2’s Slow Burn Burnt Away The Fanbase And It’s Disappointing

In Short
  • Severance Season 2 has been largely underwhelming and has not lived up to what Severance Season 1 set the bar at.
  • The latest season lacks a lot of heart, features elements that could have been covered in a short period of entire episodes and just feels like a money-milking project.
  • The fans of Severance are divided based on how they feel about the latest season and since Season 3 is confirmed, the creators will have to do something exceptional to bring the fans back on the same page.

Usually, when it comes to OTT shows, it’s really rare for us to find something that is unique and stands out from anything else. One such show came out in 2022 and managed to gain massive recognition, generating a serious fanbase. The show I am referencing to her is none other than Severance. Season 1 of this show became one of the most-watched shows on Apple TV+ and held that position for a very long time.

After a long wait of three years, Severance Season 2 was released recently, and the anticipation for this new season was at an all-time high. However, when I watched and actively covered Severance Season 2, my expectations were not met and overall, it felt like a completely different show than what Severance Season 1 promised, and in a really bad way. So, let me tell you all about how it made me feel that Severance Season 2 might have burnt away its fanbase.

Severance Became Something Completely Different in Season 2

When Severance initially came out with Season 1, the show was well put out, well written and most of all, even after its slow-burning nature, it kept the audience hooked to the screen. This was because the screenplay and style of the show continuously emitted a sense of uneasiness and suspense even if one knew what was coming next. Most of all, how can someone forget the conclusion of Season 1 with a massive cliffhanger that was delivered to us with absolute perfection?

Now, moving forward to Severance Season 2, the new season stole the very essence that made it stand out from everything else: its psychological horror. I’m not saying that Severance Season 2 does not feature psychological horror but it is heavily overshadowed by the incorporation of what can be best described as cultist-mythological horror.

The overly long episodes of Severance Season 2 start to feel like a pain to sit through because a majority of its runtime is spent in world-building and the elements that made Severance Season 1 a hit are delivered to us in the final acts of the episode. What I feel is that when the first season was being created, the creators took their sweet time to put things together, formed a watertight storyline, and went into production.

However, once the series broke all charts, things were rather rushed, and under the pressure of creating something better than last time, this series took a major hit and failed to deliver what one would expect.

Severance Season 2 Seems to Be All Brains and No Heart

Another thing that Severance Season 2 failed at is replicating the soul of Severance Season 1. In my opinion, Severance Season 1 performed the way it did because it had a lot of heart put into it. The show offered a perfect balance between emotional elements and elements that gave Severance its signature eerie yet gripping essence. No matter how long an episode was, you would not want it to end for just how gripping and emotionally moving it could turn out to be.

However, by the end of Severance Season 2, I hoped to get the same feeling but sadly, it was not there for the most part. All I feel is that the story had been stretched out too much and certain things that are shown in the series for prolonged periods could have been wrapped up relatively earlier, focusing on the main element of the respective episode. Severance Season 2 feels like a corporate project that is made simply for how successful the first season was instead of with the devotion of bringing the audience a worthwhile experience.

Severance’s Fanbase Has Been Severed

If you think that I’m the only one with such an opinion, which I understand is quite a hot take, I’d like to tell you that not just me, but a big section of the fanbase feels the same about Severance Season 2. Yes, I do agree that there is a section that believes Severance Season 2 to be as good as the first one. But, in my opinion, I can’t ignore the fact that it is nowhere close to being what the first season was.

Now that a divide of uncertainty has been created in the fanbase, Severance Season 3 will have to do something exceptional to bring fans back on the same page. Otherwise, the future of this one-of-a-kind series is inevitably doomed. What do you think? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned with us for more such updates!
