In Short
  • Pokemon Legends ZA features three starter Pokemon - Chikorita, Totodile and Tepig.
  • Chikorita is a Grass-type, Tepig is a Fire-type, and Totodile is a Water-type Pokemon.
  • Totodile is our preferred Pokemon Legends ZA starter, followed by Chikorita, and lastly Tepig.

Choosing your first starter companion is one of the best moments in any Pokemon game. While each region has its own set of starters, the new Pokemon Legends ZA game follows a very unique starter combination.

In the upcoming game, which is set in Lumios City of Kalos, the starter Pokemon are not what we expected them to be. Legends ZA has starter Pokemon from the Johto and Unova regions, much like Legends Arceus. We have detailed all the Pokemon Legends ZA starters below and the best choices you should run with.

Best Starter Choice in Pokemon Legends ZA

Determining the best starter Pokemon includes a lot of factors, such as their base stats, abilities, resistances, weaknesses, moveset pool, and their evolution levels. Pokemon Legends ZA has not been released yet, so we have no information about the determining factors.

However, as someone who has played almost every mainline Pokemon game, this is the best starter recommendation in Pokemon Legends ZA.

Note: This opinion is based on the stats, movesets, and other data from previous Pokémon installments. The recommendation might change once the game is out and we have the latest information.

1. Totodile (Best Choice)

This Water type Pokemon from Johto is no doubt the best starter in Pokemon Legends ZA. Totodile has only two weaknesses: Grass and Electric types. This makes it resistant to or neutral to damage from all other types.

Totodile also has the fastest final evolution compared to all the starters released so far. At level 18, Totodile evolves into Croconaw, which is pretty late compared to the other starters. However, Croconaw evolves into Feraligatr at level 30, whereas others typically evolve at levels 34 and 36.

This can give you an advantage over your opponents, due to the increase in stats. Feraligatr also boasts a diverse move set, making it your best choice in Pokémon Legends ZA.

2. Chikorita

Chikorita is also one of the Johto starters, besides Totodile and Cyndaquil. It has a higher base stat compared to the other starters in Legends ZA. However, it falls behind due to its many weaknesses and very few resistances.

This Pokemon also has a comparatively faster evolution. Chikorita evolves into Bayleef at level 16, which further evolves into Meganium at level 32. The Grass-type Pokemon always have a lot of strong moves, and Chikorita is no different. Meganium can learn some of the best healing moves, paralyze, poison, or put the opponent to sleep, while also hitting like a truck.

3. Tepig

Tepig is a Fire-type Pokemon hailing from Unova. Tepig is also a good option in Pokemon Legends ZA due to its low number of weaknesses and a flexible Move set.

Tepig is weak to Water, Ground, and Rock-type moves, which can make it resistant to a lot of other types. However, be mindful that Tepig’s final evolution, Emboar, brings a combo of Fire and Fighting, making it weak against Water, Ground, Flying, and Psychic.

Tepig evolves into Pignite at level 17, and then into Emboar at level 36, which is the standard evolution level. Emboar also has a versatile move set and can be a great physical attacker with the right moves.

Overall, Totodile is the best starter in Pokemon Legends ZA, but Chikorita and Tepig can be equally good if trained properly. Ultimately, you can always pick your favorite among the three and make it work.

Which of these will you pick as your starter Pokemon in Pokemon Legends ZA? Let us know in the comments below!
