What is PlayStation Blackout and Why is it Happening?
PlayStation blackout (also known as PS blackout) is a voluntary protest organized by fans in response to Sony’s decision to end the production of physical game discs starting January 2028. In the protest, fans will set down their PlayStation controllers for a week and will log out of their PSN accounts while keeping their consoles turned off.
The idea behind the protest originated from an X post by the account Does It Play?, who, with an image post, wrote, “Sony wants to abandon fans? Let’s give them a small taste of their own medicine! Together with other creators, we call for a 1-week PS Blackout in August. No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony’s platforms.”
The account also shared how PlayStation has been growing further apart from its fan base and is disconnected from its community. Issues for such fans not only stem from Sony’s decisions to cancel fan events or leave its classic franchises like Twisted Metal, Sly Cooper, and so on to gather dust, but also from its mismanagement that has been “inherited” from PS4 days.
Furthermore, when PlayStation announced its decision to end physical game disc production, several publishers stepped forward and said they weren’t aware of this and weren’t informed. This also directly impacts sales of retail stores that depend on physical game sales on a day-to-day basis.
PS Blackout Dates and Times
The PS blackout will begin on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 7 PM local time and will end on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at 7 PM local time.
This means no matter where you are in the world, if it’s 7 PM on the above dates in your region, you can participate in the PlayStation blackout.
During this time, PlayStation gamers will boycott the service and participate in an “economic and gameplay blackout” by impacting publishers and developers while giving players a voice. This is being organized especially during the summer holidays for schools in the US, which will impact daily player activity, and the service will see a massive drop in daily active users.
How Can You Join PlayStation Blackout
You don’t need to sign a petition or join a Discord server to join the PlayStation blackout. Rather, all you need to do is put down your PS5 controller and turn off your console while being logged out of your PSN account, and you’re done.
