What Is the Davy Back Fight in One Piece?

Once upon a time, pirates vying for the most capable members to strengthen their crews began to battle against each other, and a pirate game known as the Davy Back Fight was born. The game is said to have originated from the legend of Davy Jones on Hachinosu Island, and pirates continue to play the Davy Back Fight in honor of him.
This event evolved into an age-old competition where pirate crews compete against each other, with the losing crew forced to surrender members and switch sides to the victors. It was first introduced in the Long Ring Long Island arc, where Foxy Pirates challenged the Straw Hat Pirates to this long-standing tradition.
Rules of the Davy Back Fight

Davy Back Fight is not a fun pirate game, as it involves gambling your crew and Jolly Roger in line. As the pirates are known for their dirty plays, you may be curious if they play by the rules, and the answer is yes! They have to, as there are numerous fascinating rules for the ultimate Davy Back Fight game, and they are as follows:
- The game kicks off after the captains of each crew agree to play the game and shoot a bullet into the sky to signal the start.
- In addition, a certain number of coins are thrown into the sea for Davy Jones, which will define the number of games to be played. Nevertheless, three games have become the usual format.
- Seven members from each grew joins the game to play three different matches.
- After a match ends, the winner can forcefully recruit a member from the loser’s side.
- The captains aren’t an exception to getting recruited.
- If the winning team isn’t keen on recruiting new members, they can always go and steal the loser team’s Jolly Roger instead.
Now, if you are wondering the rules the losing team must follow after the defeat, they are known as the Three Articles of Defeat and are as follows:
- All the loser crew members who were recruited against their will need to pledge their loyalty to the winner crew’s captain.
- If a team’s Jolly Roger gets taken by the winners, the crew can never raise their flag containing the Jolly Roger again.
- Finally, the losing team can win back their crew member or the Jolly Roger by challenging the opponents for another Davy Back Fight and acing it.
Rocks Pirates Connection With the Davy Back Fight

Killing an admiral, destroying the Gates of Justice, plundering the Celestial Dragon’s treasures, and many other bold acts earned Rocks all the infamy in the world. After achieving these impressive feats all on his own against the World Government, Rocks began to set his eyes on taking down the other pirate crews. To do that, he needed a crew and realized it was high time to assemble one. A normal pirate often invites the person to join their crew and set sail together, but Rocks isn’t your typical pirate, is he?
Rocks decided to participate in the Davy Back Fights in Hachinosu to steal members from other pirate crews across the globe. Chapter 1155 included small panels of Rocks participating in various sets of games, winning every single one, and collecting members one by one.
In this way, Rocks gathered crew members such as Shiki, Whitebeard, Stussy, Don Marlon, Ganzui, and Ochoku. One interesting fact is that Rocks gathered enough crew members by winning in the Davy Fight Back, even before his crew had a name and a dedicated Jolly Roger. Once the crew was set, Rocks set sail to Elbaf to recruit King Harald, which was a failure, though.
