It all began with the public execution of Gold Roger in One Piece Live-Action Season 1. Not to forget, the name ‘One Piece’ has a deep connection with the pirate who died 22 years before the main timeline. It’s basically the treasure he gathered throughout his life, and before dying, he openly confirmed its existence, asking the pirates across the globe to find and take it. In addition, the pirate king also asked Monkey D. Garp to take care of his son. So, live-action only fans started to wonder if Roger is talking about Luffy. So, is Luffy actually related to Gold Roger? Well, here’s the answer.
Does Gold D. Roger Has a Connection to Luffy?

Sadly, we have to burst the bubble right here by revealing that Monkey D. Luffy isn’t connected to Gol D. Roger by blood. Roger was actually talking about Portgas D. Ace, whom Luffy knows as his elder brother. Apparently, after Gol D. Roger’s death, Garp fulfilled his responsibility towards Ace and gave him the upbringing Roger wanted for him.
Even though not blood-related, Monkey D. Luffy and Gol D. Roger are related to each other through the will of D. In the manga, it is said that those who bear the D. initial in the modern era don’t even know about its origins and significance. It was only Roger who got familiarized with it, but realizing that there was no one bearing a D in their name, and he didn’t have much time to fulfill the task, he surrendered to the Marines. Well, he wanted the future generation to carry forward his legacy. However, that didn’t happen until Monkey D. Luffy reached his teen years and decided to find the One Piece and become the King of the Pirates.
Apart from Luffy, there are several other characters who inherited the Will of D, including Trafalgar D. Law, Portgas D. Ace, Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon, and a few more. Of course, we still don’t know what exactly Will of D means, but there are theories that people who carry this will seek freedom. That is why these characters are often part of world-shaking events. That is also why pirates carrying Will of D are the biggest enemies of World Government, who well, doesn’t like the idea of freedom all that well.
In OPLA Season 2, when Buggy was about to execute Luffy, and everyone watched the sight from afar, Smokee was the one to see Roger’s will in Luffy. The boy had something special from the very beginning that allowed him to keep going, no matter how challenging an enemy showed up. Shanks was indeed his mentor, but it was Gol D. Roger’s will that ran within from the start.
