Marvel’s Secret Invasion has come to its end with an action-packed finale (check if there are post credit scenes). The earlier episodes of the series were highly capable of keeping the audience at the edge of their seats with each episode ending with an unexpected cliffhanger. Even though the series itself was packed with action and suspense, it didn’t fail to include some cool easter eggs in its episodes. So, in this article, I bring you the top 5 easter eggs in Marvel’s Secret Invasion that you might have missed.
1. The Promise
Marvel’s Secret Invasion, even though a new series, has its roots set in the MCU with Captain Marvel 2019. In the second episode of Secret Invasion, we see a flashback straight out of Captain Marvel, where the Skrulls were first introduced in Marvel Cinematic Universe. Later on, we see a scene where Nick Fury is seen making a promise to the Skrulls that he will find the Skrulls a new home planet in return for them working as Fury’s operatives in disguise. We also see a young Gravik among these Skrulls.
The whole of Secret Invasion emerged out of Fury’s inability to find these Skrulls a new home and on top of that, he disappeared, once because of the snap and then again, of his free will. If you are wondering where was Nick Fury because Secret Invasion, we have an idea. With neither Carol Danvers nor Fury in the picture, Gravik with some other Skrulls felt betrayed and launched this invasion to take over Earth.
2. Dreykov
Even though not appearing himself, one of the key villains in the Black Widow movie is mentioned in the third episode of Marvel’s Secret Invasion. Varra hands over Fury an envelope saying that this should send Dreykov’s men on their heels. Since this episode is a flashback to 1998, this tells us that Dreykov has been a threat and on the S.H.I.E.L.D. watchlist for a long time. It also makes us think that during this time where was Black Widow? Well in the year 1998, Black Widow was most probably a teenager still under training in the Red Room under the Black Widow program.
3. Faces
Marvel’s Secret Invasion is a show not only filled with action-packed adventure and serious suspense but also a lot of symbolism embedded into the show by the creators, the most prominent one being, faces. If you look closely, most of the important scenes that include Gravik, Varra, or G’iah, take place in an environment that has a lot of faces.
But that’s not it, when Gravik shows up, the faces often symbolize creation or power like when Talos and Gravik meet, the art Gallery had the faces of the Statesmen in the painting and around it, the heads of prominent greek scholars and philosophers. When they are sitting down and Talos is trying to make Gravik give up the insurgency, in the background there are two hangings with the title “Masters of Tapestry”.
Interestingly, Tapestry stands for reference to an intricate or complex combination of things or sequence of events. This reference could be a symbol for all the events that have led to this moment, the failed promise, the abandonment of Nick Fury, the disappearance of Carol Danvers, etc. You would also observe that one of the hanging is a man and another one is a woman, which can be interpreted to be a reference to Carol Danvers and Nick Fury.
In the Fifth episode and even before it, we see a lot of white masks hanging on the walls of Varra and Fury’s house, these decorative pieces can be a reference to the loss of identity for Varra and her putting on a human face as a mask to fit in but not really being comfortable in it.
4. Raava
One of the biggest revelations Secret Invasion threw at us was Rhodey being a Skrull causing turmoil among the fans of War Machine and leaving people wondering how long had he been a Skrull. In the fifth episode of Marvel’s Secret Invasion, we witness a conversation between Rhodey and Gravik where Gravik addresses Rhodey as Raava.
Although this might seem like not a big deal, but, hear me out. Raava is not just another Skrull, according to Marvel Comics, Raava is a rogue pirate on her planet who fought against the Skrull Empire. But she was captured and thrown into prison and eventually escaped with the help of Black Bolt and some other inmates. In the comics, she is driven by vengeance for the death of her children which turns her into a fierce warrior.
5. G’iah’s Superpowers
What could be a bigger easter egg in a Marvel series than the Avengers themselves? In the final episode of Secret Invasion, we witness Gravik and G’iah fighting in an epic standoff. G’iah is seen using the powers of Avengers like Hulk, and Captain Marvel to fight against Gravik who uses the powers of some enhanced individuals, like Cull obsidian and the infamous telekinetic, Ebony Maw. We also witness G’iah use the powers of the members of The Guardians of the Galaxy as well, we see her transform her arm into that of Drax and grow antennas like Mantis to make Gravik sleep.
In the end, Gravik gets killed but what we should be focusing on is the fact that with these powers, G’iah has easily become the most powerful character in the MCU and might also score a spot in the Young Avengers eventually.
