Teamfight Tactics in Marvel Rivals? Well, not exactly—but close. No, League of Legends isn’t crossing over, but Marvel Rivals is bringing that same auto chess energy with a limited-time mode called Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol. Imagine Marvel heroes clashing in strategic matchups where you fight other players in an autobattler. It is strategic chess with a lot of fun elements and the flair of Marvel characters. So, if you’re a fan of auto chess or just curious about this fresh new twist, here’s what you need to know about this game mode.
How Does Marvel Rivals Auto Chess Work?
Marvel Rivals’ auto chess mode follows the familiar gameplay style fans of the genre will recognize. It blends in the games like TFT and Dota Underlords appropriately without making things too complicated. While full details on Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol are still under wraps, we’ll be updating this as more info drops once the event goes live. For now, here’s everything we’ve uncovered about this exciting limited-time mode:
Selection Phase

Marvel Rivals’ auto chess mode shakes things up right from the start. Unlike traditional autobattlers, where you begin with a single unit, Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol lets you choose six heroes from the available Marvel Rivals roster, though not every character is unlocked in this mode just yet.
Once your lineup is set, you’ll face off against five other players. Everyone starts with 50 points, and each loss chips away at your total. The last player standing wins, making your team composition absolutely crucial from the get-go.
Positioning Matters

Positioning your units is just as important as picking the right heroes. In Marvel Rivals auto chess, each character has a unique skillset, so how you place them on the board can make or break a round. Take Hela, for example—she’s a ranged Duelist and struggles in close combat, so keeping her behind a tank is key.
But watch out for assassin-type units that can leap straight to your backline. In those cases, placing a support or Vanguard unit in the rear can help absorb the hit. Remember, smart positioning often outweighs raw power. Check enemy boards between rounds and adjust your setup to stay one step ahead.
Marvel Rivals Auto Chess Economy and Synergies

Before you start playing, another key thing you must learn is how to manage the economy. Using the points properly at the Card Shop will let you make the best synergies in the game. The dev preview shows synergy icons on the left side of the screen, though the developers haven’t detailed how they work yet. Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol introduces a card-based system that enhances your heroes with various buffs.
These cards can boost stats like attack speed, health, or damage reduction, and players choose one out of four cards after each round. These icons match the in-game card and role symbols, suggesting a system tied to hero roles or card types, similar to other auto-battlers. The game also includes a “Change Hero” tab, allowing mid-game roster adjustments.
After getting a winning or losing streak, you will earn the points that show up in the top right during the buying phase. To create synergies, you must purchase the cards. You can press the Refresh button to get new randomized cards. If you like a card from the deck but don’t have enough points, you can lock it by pressing the lock button.
Moreover, a multiplier system is also in place—each hero has a visible multiplier (e.g., x1, x2, x3), and a total multiplier is shown on the left side of the screen. Higher multipliers enhance a hero’s power significantly. For instance, Venom at x3 appears much larger, Hela at x2 fires splitting projectiles, and Namor at x2 controls multiple creatures. This looks similar to how, in TFT, players can improve characters’ abilities by leveling them up.

When is Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol Coming Out?
Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol auto chess mode is set to launch on Friday, June 6, 2025, as part of the Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 update. Alongside this new mode, Ultron will also become a playable hero. It is being introduced as a limited-time experimental feature. However, with how popular the genre is, there is a chance that auto chess could stick around permanently if the community response is strong. As a player with over 300 hours in Teamfight Tactics, I would love to see my favorite Marvel Rivals characters in the auto chess mode forever.
