When and How Was Gojo Sealed Inside Prison Realm?
Before we talk about how he was released, here is a quick recap of how Gojo got sealed in the first place. In the Jujutsu Kaisen manga chapter 90: The Shibuya Incident, Part 8 and in anime, S2E9 titled Shibuya Incident – Gate, Open, Kenjaku came up with a brilliant plan to lock away Gojo Satoru in the Prison Realm in Jujutsu Kaisen.
He opened the prison realm to seal him, but there was a difficult condition he needed to fulfill. That is the person (to be sealed) should be within a four-meter radius for around one minute. Now, it is a big feat to pull off as you can’t keep the Sorcerer Supreme distracted for a minute.
But Kenjaku in the form of Geto Suguru (Pseudo-Geto) revealed himself for the first time in front of Gojo. Gojo was shocked to see his late best friend back alive in the flesh. For those unaware, Gojo is the one who dealt the final blow to his friend, and we have already covered in detail the meaning of Gojo’s last words to Geto in Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s ending.
As a result, Gojo was bewildered and the flashbacks with his best friend rushed his mind for a minute. That was enough for Kenjaku to capture him using the Prison Realm. And that is how Kenjaku ultimately managed to capture Gojo in the first place. And well, the JJK fan community has been keeping count ever since.
Therefore, for the JJK manga fans, it’s been 1189 days since Gojo was sealed. These 3 years flew by fast and Gojo indeed got unsealed in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. Now that you know about how he was sealed, let’s see how Gojo has been unsealed.
JJK Chapter 221: When Does Gojo Get Unsealed in Manga?
With the culling game’s arc moving slowly and introducing us to new characters, an unhurried story, and Sukuna’s new form, Chapter 220 finally teased Gojo’s comeback after a long time. But we didn’t expect that to happen in the very next Chapter 221 itself. After a 3-year-long wait, Gojo was finally unsealed from the prison realm with the help of Hana Kurusu.
Hana Kurusu used her Angel’s curse technique, Jacob’s ladder, to open the back gate of the prison realm. After Gojo was released, he went straight to the place where Kenjaku and Sukuna were, which made the sorcerers who released him confused. When Kenjaku found out that Gojo escaped in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 221, he was perplexed about how in the world he pulled it off after the back of the Prison Realm was absorbed.
When Will Gojo Be Unsealed in Jujutsu Kaisen Anime?
It took about 3 years and around 130 chapters in the manga to finally see Gojo get unsealed. So how long will it take in the anime? This is a rather difficult question to answer, but let’s talk about it by breaking down all the arcs and chapters before the unsealing happens.
First of all, to temper your expectations, you should know that Gojo Satoru won’t be unsealed or returning in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. That said, let’s count the days until he shall be truly back.
The Shibuya Incident arc will conclude in chapter 136, and the ongoing season 2 may adapt the whole thing to wrap up this arc. Right after that, we have Itadori’s Extermination Arc (chapters 137-143), and Perfect Preparation Arc (chapters 144-158). These are kind of mini-arcs, but up next, we have yet another long-running arc called the Culling Game Arc (chapters 159-221). And it is only at the end of this arc that we see our beloved Gojo sensei again.
So, as mentioned above, Gojo was sealed inside the Prison Realm in chapter 90 and is confirmed to be unsealed in chapter 221. Thus, there is a vast number of chapters with many more crucial moments waiting to get animated before the unsealing.
Therefore, right after season 2 ends in 2023, there are 85 chapters more to be adapted until Gojo’s unsealing. Let’s say MAPPA Studios can adapt these 85 chapters in 24 episodes in season 3, but it’s a herculean task, to be honest. In comparison, season 1 adapted 63 chapters into 24 episodes, and season 2 is currently adapting 73 chapters in 23 episodes as scheduled.
So, it will be an arduous effort for MAPPA to do justice to the source material by condensing 85 chapters into season 3. Also, we should not forget the prolonged production time it will take to adapt all these arcs.
Hence, it will most likely take 3 to 5 years of time before we get to see Gojo Satoru in action again. By then, there will be a lot of significant changes in the course of Jujutsu Kaisen’s history, and not to mention, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga will also simultaneously end as the author Gege Akutami has mentioned that the manga is in its final stages already.

Even after being stuck inside the prison realm for 19 days (as per the manga timeline and three years for readers), Gojo’s confidence is still on another level. Gojo established his supremacy by terrorizing Kenjaku and dissing Sukuna as if they were nothing.
He then punched Uraume in the gut when she tried a sneak attack. In the final panels of the chapter, Gojo remarks on something he said in the past to Itadori Yuji. Back to episode 2 (manga chapter 3) of the first season, Itadori asked Gojo – who is stronger between him and Sukuna.
Back then, Gojo remarked that if Sukuna ate all his fingers and gained his full power, it might be a little tough for him to defeat the King of Curses. Then, Itadori in return asked – Would you lose?, to which Gojo replied with “No.” The same lines are uttered by Gojo at the end of JJK chapter 221 and makes for an amazing throwback to the initial chapters.
Now that Gojo is released in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 221, he has a bigger mess to clean with a clash against the mightiest opponents. And the highly anticipated Gojo vs Sukuna battle kick-started after this comeback chapter. Fans have gone wild after witnessing that the man, myth, legend, and our Gojo sensei being truly back for real. It’s funny how Gojo was stuck inside the prison realm only for 19 days (as per the manga timeline), yet we had to wait nearly 3 years to see him again. Shocking, isn’t it? Now we have to wait even more to see him back in anime (PeepoCry).
Nonetheless, Gojo sensei hasn’t lost his charisma even after being trapped in the prison realm. He’s the same charming and cocky jujutsu sorcerer he was before; complete with a bone-chilling aura, his humor and poking fun at enemies, and his confidence. The legendary battle between Gojo vs Sukuna fight in Jujutsu Kaisen also seems to have reached its climax in the manga [HUGE SPOILERS].
