Megumi Fushiguro was born to Toji Zenin and an undisclosed woman in Jujutsu Kaisen. As for why he carries the Fushiguro name and not Zenin, that’s because Toji took his wife’s last name, aka Fushiguro, as he didn’t want to be associated with the Zenin clan.

Gege Akutami mentions that Toji reverted to his old troubled personality as his wife died sometime after Megumi was born. As a result, Toji didn’t step up to take on the dad role and sold Megumi to the Zenin clan as he became the new Ten Shadows Technique user of this era.

So, Toji Fushiguro wasn’t present during Megumi’s upbringing. Thus, Megumi had no idea who his father was and what he looked like in the series for a long time. As Toji was resurrected back during the Shibuya Incident arc in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, we believed that Megumi would learn the truth finally when they came across each other.

However, as Toji started to lose his sense inside a new vessel, they both clashed against each other. Luckily, Toji realized and ended his life to keep his son safe from himself. While we did not get the revelation we wanted, Toji asked Megumi about his surname. When he responded with Fushiguro, Toji was pleased that his son had also renounced the Zenin name.

But this interaction wasn’t enough for Megumi to realize that he was fighting against his father all along.

After this encounter, Megumi never had the chance to seek the answer for who his father was as he was caught in great turmoil. The most reliable person who could tell him who was his dad was his sensei Gojo Satoru, who was caught inside the Prison Realm in the Shibuya arc.

And when Gojo did get unsealed from the Prison Realm, Sukuna had already taken over Megumi’s body. But upon witnessing Gojo’s unexpected death in the series, we felt like Megumi would never find out who his father was.

Fortunately, Megumi was freed from Sukuna’s grip, thanks to Yuji defeating Sukuna in the end. As Gojo couldn’t meet Nobara or Megumi before his battle against Sukuna, he left letters to both of his students. In his letter to Megumi, Gojo explicitly revealed the status of Megumi’s father in his exact tone.

As Gojo killed Toji Fushiguro in their heated battle when Gojo used to be a student, he remarked to Megumi that his father was no longer alive. This was Gege’s unconventional way of breaking the news to Megumi. Furthermore, Gojo apologized to Megumi with a “my bad!!!” in the end, as you can see in the letter above.

However, it should be noted that Gojo didn’t directly mention that Toji was his father in the letter. So, it is totally up to Megumi now to find out who Gojo killed in his past and connect the dots to find the answer to who his father was. Moreover, Megumi also laughed heartily after reading this letter, so either he reacted this way after Gojo’s funny way of revealing or it suddenly clicked for him that Toji was his dad all along.

This is not the way we wanted this mystery to be left by author Gege Akutami. We hope Megumi can learn about his father in the remaining three chapters. That said, do you think Megumi can interpret the answer with Gojo’s letter? Let us know in the comments below.
