Gege Akutami didn’t become a household name among the manga community until his magnum opus, the Jujutsu Kaisen series, brought him the limelight he deserved. Gege’s JJK 0 with Yuta as the protagonist caught the attention of manga readers, and the author bet on his sorcery series by delivering another installment, the main Jujutsu Kaisen manga, in 2018.
Gege was riding high on the momentum with his JJK manga, where manga readers came in droves to read the dark fantasy shonen. Gege Akutami was on the right track, where his masterpiece reached greater heights until he decided to ruin it all for the fans in the finale, which should have ended on a legendary note.
Spoilers Warning:
This article contains spoilers for both JJK and JJK: Modulo manga. Proceed with caution.
Yes! I’m talking about the Jujutsu Kaisen manga’s ending, where the author ultimately decided to rush the final saga, leaving his fans disappointed. It was a hard pill to swallow for fans as the JJK series was at its zenith with the Gojo vs. Sukuna fight, only for the unexpected downfall of the final saga to happen later on. This act seemed as if Gege didn’t want to work on his beloved work anymore.
Gege Akutami Returning to His Roots in 2025

The final saga of JJK fell short, and it truly seemed like the end of the road for the series. Everyone anticipated Gege to work on a new manga, as the author has expressed his interest in creating an idol manga next. Personally, I wanted Gege to come up with something new apart from the sorcery world he worked on for over 8 years. However, to his fans’ disbelief, Gege announced a new spin-off manga set in the JJK universe titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo.
Honestly, I was highly skeptical of Gege’s decision to return to his roots at the start. I certainly didn’t want another Jujutsu Kaisen series until I began reading Modulo chapters weekly. First of all, Gege had a clear goal with his Modulo series. The author disclosed that it will be a short manga running for just six months and won’t feature more than three volumes. This was a huge relief for me and the millions of fans, as going in with a clear goal meant fewer chances of the spin-off being ruined in the end like its predecessor.
Next, he teamed up with fellow mangaka Yuji Iwasaki, letting him handle the artwork so he could concentrate on writing without worrying about his health issues. So, Gege has making the right decisions since the start of his new spin-off manga. Ultimately, the author won the hearts of his fans and regained their trust with a compelling story.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Is Hailed as One of Gege Akutami’s Best Works Yet

The major problem with making a sequel or a spin-off to a great series is how the author moves the story forward. Fortunately, Gege’s decision to make Yuta and Maki’s grandchildren the protagonists of the new JJK series was perfect when people expected the spin-off to be about Yuji’s future generation. The story also took place several decades later, and Gege did the unexpected by adding aliens, the Simurians, into the picture.
16 chapters have been published so far at the time of writing, and Gege has never wasted any one of those with filler content. As someone who felt glad that the Jujutsu Kaisen series was over in the past, I was instantly hooked by the compelling drama centered on the conflict between humans and Simurians in Modulo. And it didn’t stop here, Gege continued to offer intriguing characters from both the human and Simurian sides, making it tough to choose a side. That is a testament to how well the author is exploring the themes of co-existence so far.
In addition, Gege has been surprising the fans with many more things. We already have a Sukuna-level threat here; there are many references and cameos of the fan-favorite JJK characters, such as Yuji, Nobara, and more. We can feel the ripple effects of the main Jujutsu Kaisen series on a good note in the spin-off here.
In a nutshell, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo manga is simply Gege at its best. The author’s writing keeps shining in the spin-off manga. For instance, the backstory of Simurians was done so well that fans can’t stop praising the author. And these are the very same fans who were disheartened by the ending of JJK. This is more than enough to prove to one how the JJK fandom loves the new Modulo series.
So far, Gege has gotten everything right, and if he successfully manages to stick the landing (unlike the previous time), then Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo will top its predecessor as the author’s best work yet. I have been having a great time reading the new chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo manga every week this year. Hopefully, Gege can provide a satisfying conclusion to his unique story without any rush.
