I Believe Firefly and Sam’s Secret in HSR Seemingly Borrowed from an Iconic Game Series

Honkai Star Rail’s 2.1 is right around the corner and it will likely shed light on some of the mysteries of the 2.0 trailblazing missions. Out of all the mysteries, the story behind Firefly, her death, and Sam the Stellaron Hunter is the most intriguing. The update is close, but I couldn’t just leave the entire Firefly and Sam debacle up to the 2.1, without putting in one more wild theory in the pot, and it’s equally as wild as Dr. Ratio impersonating as Aventurine theory.

Firefly and Sam are the same person. Not shocked right? This rumor has been circulating in the Honkai Star Rail community for a long while and I even covered it in one of the segments on Firefly’s death. However, I have figured out an additional piece of the puzzle and it might finally put this theory to rest. My wild theory suggests that Firefly and Sam are inspired by the famous Nintendo character, Samus Aran, of the Metroid game series.

Is the Metroid Game Series the Inspiration?

After completing the Honkai Star Rail 2.0 trailblazing missions, I have been trying to figure out clues for many of the mysteries, and the one on top was Firefly’s death and her connection to Sam. Now, Sam is an interesting character. But what intrigued me the most about him (or her) is the name. Every Stellaron Hunter we have known so far has very distinct names, like Kafka, Blade, or Silver Wolf. Compared to that, Sam is a very basic name and doesn’t stand out.

After racking my brain, I remember this one classic Nintendo game we all grew up playing, the Metroid series (Super Metroid on the SNES for me to be exact). Metroid is a game where Samus Aran protects the galaxy by fighting space pirates and other malevolent forces and also protects the misuse of the powerful parasite named Metroid. Samus Aran wears a power suit, much like Sam, and underneath all that armor, she is a female character.

Similarities Between Firefly, Sam, and Samus Aran

Firefly and Samus Aran are quite similar to each other. In the Honkai Star Rail 2.0 Trailblazing missions, we learned a bit about Firefly’s backstory. Based on that, I have found a few clear connections between the characters. Here are a few similarities between Firefly, Sam, and Samus Aran.

Their Homeland was Destroyed

During the heartfelt conversation between Firefly and the Trailblazer on Firefly’s secret hideout, she revealed that her homeland was destroyed either by the Legion or the Swarm. Similarly, Samus Aran’s homeland, the K-2L mining colony was raided by Space Pirates, and the colony was destroyed in the process.

Both are a Part of a Rogue Organization (With Good Intentions?)

Sam is part of the Stellaron Hunters, who are a rogue organization hunted by the rest of the world. However, the Stellaron Hunters haven’t appeared as the bad guys in the story. On the contrary, they have helped the Trailblazer solve many conflicts and issues.

Similarly, Samus Aran was part of the Galactic Federation and she was sent to track and defeat Space Pirates. Later she became a Bounty Hunter, although not in the traditional sense, as she was more of a rogue space adventurer, who fought the Space Pirates and other nefarious organizations, preventing them from misusing the parasite named Metroid, which sounds similar to a Stellaron if you think about it.

Both Are Inflicted with a Sickness

Firefly also mentioned in her heartfelt conversation with the Trailblazer that she has a sickness that makes her lose touch with reality, making everything dull. Now, if she is Sam, this can be the reason behind her strength too.

On the other hand, Samas Aran was inflicted with the Metroid parasite, becoming the sole Metroid species in the entire Galaxy. Although the parasite is not a sickness in the same sense as Firefly, it does amplify her powers.

Hoyoverse Took Inspiration From the Old Nintendo Game?

Yes, because Metroid is not just an old Nintendo game series, it’s the game that started the entire Metroidvania gaming genre (alongside Castlevania, although the name was taken from Metroid).

Samus Aran is one of the most popular female gaming characters of all time and is highly regarded in the gaming community. Taking inspiration from Samus Aran for Firefly and Sam is not a farfetched idea and is a likely possibility. However, this wild theory is standing on a very thin presumption of Firefly and Sam being the same character, which is looking more likely each day.

So, what do you think about my wild theory? Do you think Firefly and Sam are the same person, and if yes, then do you think her character was inspired by Samus Aran? Tell us your opinion on this entire theory in the comment section.
