Larval Tears in Elden Ring are plentiful, but tracking their location can be a daunting task, thanks to the sheer size of the Lands Between. A white bean-like item, the Larval Tear is an essential item that players discover in Elden Ring. However, they come in a limited quantity, and tracking them down boils down to how much the players explore the world. Today, we explain what is this mysterious item and how players can track down Larvel Tears to use them in their playthrough.
What Is a Larval Tear in Elden Ring?
Larval Tear is an essential item that players can track down in many areas in Elden Ring. A silver-white-color object that looks like a small creature with tentacles jutting out from its stomach allows players to respec their character and check out various other viable builds in the game by changing attributes. Players get this ability after they defeat an optional Elden Ring boss, Renalla, at the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
Furthermore, Larval Tear is a vital item tied to the concept of rebirth, and a single Larval Tear opens up the game for players to experiment with. Found in numerous locations in Elden Ring as an item pick up, enemy drop, and even as an item sold by merchants, Larval Tears are limited in quantity and can only be obtained eighteen times. On top of this, each of them is for one-time use only.
Every Larval Tear Location in Elden Ring
Players can venture out into various locations in the game to get Larval Tears in Elden Ring. Typically, there are three ways through which players can get Larval Tear.
- As item drops all around the map
- As purchasable items in limited quantity from NPC traders (two specifically).
- As enemy loot drops after defeating them.
With that out of the way, let’s look at the locations where players can visit and get a Larval Tear for themselves.
Item Drops Around The Map
1. Village of the Albinaurics
Village of the Albinaurics has a sad lore behind it. Created by humans, the creatures were considered cursed and impure because of not being graced by the Erdtree. As such, they were hunted by the cursemongers who desecrated the area and killed the residents.
Players can go to this location through the poison swamp, through the northwest section of Liurnia of the Lakes area. Once there, players can pick up the Larval Tear from a dead body inside the village. Be careful, as an optional boss called The Omenkiller roams the area.
2. Resurrection Painting Reward
One of the optional legacy dungeon locations of the game which also starts the most complex side-questline in Elden Ring, players can obtain a Larval Tear in Caria Manor if they dare to overcome the scary hands littered all around the map, ready to pounce and kill them. Procuring it requires players to start the Resurrection Painting puzzle, which begins by picking up the painting from the Artist’s Shack, east of the Liurnia Lake.
Once the painting is acquired, head over to Caria Manor and reach the boss fight of the area, Royal Knight Loretta. Defeat the boss and enter the Three Sisters area through the arena. Instead of going straight, take a right and follow the road, which takes you behind the manor in a Graveyard. After reaching this point, a spectral ghost will be sitting on a chair, and right beside it is items, one of which is a Larval Tear. Remember that players cannot skip directly to this portion and require the Resurrection Painting to receive the items.
3. Near Nokron, Eternal City Site of Grace in Nokron, Eternal City
Nokron, Eternal City is one of the mid-game underground areas players can venture to and also the area where Elden Ring provides players with Larval Tears in numerous encounters. The entrance to the city opens up in the middle of the ground near Fort Haligh West after defeating Starscourge Radahn at the Caelid.
To reach this area, players need to explore the beginning area of Nokron, unlocking a site of grace in the process – Nokron, Eternal City. After spawning, head outside the door towards a large stone building at the right, where the item is pickable from a dead body.
4. The Gazebo in Nokron, Eternal City
Another Larval Tear is in the Gazebo, right before you reach the Mimic Tear boss fight in Nokron. Walk in and pick it up but before doing that, be mindful of the two Silver Tears falling from the roof of the Gazebo, which drop when you approach the item.
Purchasable Items from NPC
Throughout the game, only two NPCs sell Larval Tear.
1. Pidia, Carian Servant
Pidia is one of the two NPCs which sells Larval Tear as items. To reach them, take down Royal Knight Loretta, opening the path toward the Three Sisters area. Immediately crossing the gate and entering the land, take a left and follow the road toward a cliff. Near it, a golden beetle will wait.
There will be a rooftop where Torrent can jump down at this location. Once there, carefully check towards the right, where some wooden platforms are placed downwards. Finishing the platforming successfully will land the user on top of another roof with a ladder going downwards. Follow this ladder, and you’ll meet Pidia, Carian Servant. She will sell one Larval Tear for 3000 runes.
There is a catch. If players complete Ranni’s questline before reaching the location of Pidia for the first time, they will die at the hands of soldiers. In that case, players need to go to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable hold and present the Pidia’s Bell Bearing dropped by the character upon their death, which opens up the shop and allows players to buy the Larval Tear.
2. Siorfa River Merchant
The second and only merchant in Elden Ring selling a Larval Tear is located underground in the Siorfa River. Players need to spawn at the Aquedact-Facing Cliff and move toward the area where giant crabs are.
Near it, players will find a wooden scaffolding they need to traverse. After climbing it, players need to follow a scaffolding towards the back, which will take them to the location of the Nomadic Merchant. He sells one Larval Tear for 3000 runes.
Enemy Loot Drop After Defeating Them
Most of the Larval Tears that players procure throughout the locations in Elden Ring are dropped by many enemies in-game. Here are all of them.
1. Near Agheel Lake South Site of Grace
If there is something that surely will catch a player by surprise, some enemies tend to transform into stronger enemies. This particular Larval Tear pickup is one of the many instances of that in the game. Spawn at the Agheel Lake South Site of Grace to grab the Larval Tear. From here, head east, and you will see a sword-wielding Wandering Noble standing by himself. Take him down, which transforms the noble into a lesser Runebear. Subdue the Runebear and take the reward of one Larval Tear.
2. On the Liurnia of the Lake, Between Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack
Liurnia of the Lake is one of the few areas on the map that houses the waterbodies in the world of Elden Ring. It also contains two of my most hated enemies in the game – the Crayfish and Grafted Scion. Unfortunately, to my sadness, one of the Larval Tears is located among these enemies.
Players need to head to the area between Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack on Liurnia of the Lake to get the Larval Tear. Once there, players will see a few crayfish enjoying their slumber and one of them patrolling the area. Take the one patrolling down, and to their surprise, the crayfish transforms into a Grafted Scion upon death. Take the Scion down, which awards the players a Larval Tear.
3. South of Caelid Highway South Site of Grace
Caelid is the place in Elden Ring that houses the remnants of one of the tragic wars from an old era. It also houses one of the Larval Tears found in the game. Players spawn at the Caelid Highway South Site of Grace and start heading to the cliff toward the south, bringing them to an area with coffins. Here, identify a wandering noble who turns into a Troll upon death. Kill it and take the Larval Tear.
4. Windmill Village
To get another Larval Tear, players need to travel to Windmill Village in Elden Ring. To get this, first, spawn at the Rampartside Path site of grace. From here, head north towards an unnamed run, where a wandering Noble should be sitting, cowering. Killing him will transform the enemy into a Lion Guardian. Kill the enemy and obtain the Larval Tear.
5. Mount Gelmir
The next Larval Tear location in Elden Ring is at the camp located in Mount Gelmir. Simply spawn at the Road of Iniquity site of grace and head east towards the camp. There, find a flaming putrid corpse and kill it, transforming it into a Wormface. Kill it and get awarded with one Larval Tear.
6. Nokron Mimic Tear Boss Fight
Mimic Tear is one of the bosses players encounter early on after they start exploring Nokron, the underground city. The boss mimics the player’s weapons, fighting style, armor, and every other item, so make sure before you enter the boss fight to unequip everything. Later, once inside the boss room, equip your weapon and take down the enemy. Doing so will award you with two Larval Tears.
7. Nokron, Night’s Sacred Ground
Players can discover the next Larval Tear at Night’s Sacred Ground, further down in the lower city are in Nokron. Simply defeat a giant metal ball in the area and obtain the Larval Tear.
8. The Bridge of Nokstella
The next location of Larval Tear is on the bridge of Nokstella, Eternal City, another underground location in Elden Ring. While on the bridge, take out a hostile Siver Sphere, receiving the item in the process.
9. Northeast Building in Nokstella
After taking out the Silver Sphere on the bridge, head to a building Northeast of the bridge in Nokstella. Inside the structure, lock on a Silver Tear dripping from the top of a ceiling. Attack it using a ranged throwable and get it on the ground to deliver the final blow. Doing so will give players a Larval Tear.
10. Near The End of Nokstella
The final piece of Larval Tear location in Nokstella is near the end of the area. Enter a building, immediately after reaching the top of Nokstella, and you will find a Silver Tear dripping from the ceiling. Lock into it, and bring it down using throwables. Killing it will award the player with one Larval Tear.
11. Dropped by a Runebear in Consecrated Snowfield
The final Larval Tear location in Elden Ring is at the snowy parts of Mountain of the Giant, near the Consecrated Snowfield. Located southeast of the Inner Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace, are two noblemen. Taking them out will transform one of them into a lesser Runebear, and killing the bear will give players the final Larval Tear of the game.
How To Use Larval Tears After I Obtain Them
After obtaining the item in Elden Ring from the various areas, players need to follow the steps below to use the Larval Tear and respec themselves.
Defeat Renalla
- Before traveling to various locations to obtain a Larval Tear in Elden Ring, ensure Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, has been defeated. To fight Renalla, players need to travel to the Academy of Raya Lucaria legacy dungeon.
- To enter the Academy of Raya Lucaria, players obtain the Academy Glinstone Key. Players can find hints about it by reading a note on a corpse in front of the Academy Gate. Spawn on the Temple Quarter Site of Grace and keep heading straight towards the northwestern location.
- Doing so will bring players to an open area with Glinstone Dragon Smarag. Behind him is the Academy Glinestone Key on a dead body. Players can defeat the dragon or sneak past him and grab the key. Once done, head back to the South Raya Lucaria gate and enter the dungeon.
- Academy of Raya Lucaria is a straightforward legacy dungeon, and once followed till the end, it brings players in front of Rennala. She is a magic-wielding boss with two phases. The first phase is passive and requires players to kill glowing enemies to take down their protective shield. The second phase is more hands-on for players, as she uses magic to damage them.
- Once defeated, Rennala becomes an NPC that a player can interact.
Use Larval Tear
- Afterward, players travel to various locations on the map in Elden Ring to grab a Larval Tear. Once obtained, spawn to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library Site of Grace.
- Go to Rennala, sitting in the middle of the Grand Library, and interact with her. This will give players a prompt asking if they want to rebirth. Choose yes, and this will open up another menu. Here, pick the option rebirth, which resets all the attributes and allows players to respec their characters.
- Each rebirth consumes one Larval Tear, so only use them when required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Once inside the rebirth menu, players can only respec their character up until their level points. So, for example, if a player is level 100 and wants to respec their character, the game allows re-allotment of points on attribute only till players reach back to level 100.
Respec does not require any additional runes to spend. You only need a Larval Tear to do it.
Since a player can obtain 18 Larval Tears in one playthrough, and each rebirth costs one, players can respec up to 18 times in one playthrough without restrictions.
