Epic Games just put out the last major update of Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 2. This brought a lot of new content while also leaving many players with the same question: Did Fortnite remove fall damage? If you are also confused about the nature of fall damage in the game right now, come with us as we break down the answer.

Did Epic Games Remove Fall Damage from Fortnite?

No, fall damage still exists in Fortnite. However, in the latest Fortnite 40.40 update, Epic officially removed lethal fall damage from Unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build modes. While Fortnite has not removed fall damage entirely, players are no longer instantly eliminated by a high-altitude drop, regardless of how much health they have.

Instead of simply disappearing into a loot pile when you hit the ground, the new fall damage mechanics take over. For starters, no matter how high the fall, your health will not drop below 1 HP. Upon hitting the ground from a lethal height, your character enters a brief “splat” animation. During this animation, your character will lie flat on the ground and be unable to shoot or build.

These new mechanics do not come with their own penalty. While you will survive the impact, the preceding fall will completely drain your Shields (and Overshield in Fortnite Zero Build) and almost all of your HP. This means, despite not dying to fall damage, you will be extremely vulnerable to a single shot from any weapon in the Fortnite loot pool.

Is Fall Damage Still in Ranked Fortnite Matches?

Yes, Epic Games has not removed fall damage from Ranked Fortnite lobbies. If you are climbing through the Fortnite Ranks, you will have to adhere to the same fall damage rules as before. In Ranked modes, both Battle Royale and Zero Build, falling from more than three stories high remains a lethal threat. Epic is seemingly keeping the “Splat” mechanic restricted to casual modes for now to collect player feedback before deciding if it fits in the competitive meta.

While you won’t die instantly with the new fall damage changes in Fortnite, jumping off heights isn’t exactly a get out of jail free card. You will still need to look after your health, something that the new Fortnite Overwatch Caduceus Staff can help you with.
