- Oricon has finally revealed the statistics for the best-selling manga in 2024, with Jujutsu Kaisen leading the charge.
- Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen surpassed One Piece to become the top-selling manga with over 7,610,995 copies sold in Japan.
- New-gen manga such as Frieren, The Apothecary Diaries, and Blue Lock occupied the remaining top five positions.
We are in the endgame of 2024, and this year has been a rollercoaster ride for manga fans. This year marked the end of many of our beloved Shonen manga, including Jujutsu Kaisen, Oshi no Ko, MHA, and more. Before we welcome 2025, it is time to review this year’s greatest highlights in the manga industry. We are a few weeks away from finding out the anime of the year. However, the top 10 best-selling manga of 2024 have been revealed today. So, find out if your favorite manga made the cut or not.
Jujutsu Kaisen Emerges as the Best-Selling Manga in 2024
Another year has passed quickly, but 2024 has been a wonderful year for manga enthusiasts. This year was dominated by Shonen heavyweights, like Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece. They went toe to toe against each other, but Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen came out as the winner at the end. I believe the primary reason JJK became the best-selling manga of 2024 is because Gege wrapped up his magnum opus earlier this year.
Even though the final saga of Jujutsu Kaisen felt a bit underwhelming to most in the fandom, it did not hinder its manga sales throughout the year. Thanks to Sukuna’s carnage and Yuji’s metal, JJK by Gege Akutami tops the 2024 Oricon manga sale charts with over 7,610,995 copies sold.
On the other hand, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece ends as the runner-up with 5,250,210 copies, even though the manga suffered from many hiatuses. Here is the complete list of manga that made their way to the top 10 manga sales ranking chart (via Oricon) in 2024:
- Jujutsu Kaisen — 7,610,995 copies
- One Piece — 5,250,210 copies
- Frieren Beyond Journey’s End — 4,988,170 copies
- The Apothecary Diaries — 4,723,562 copies
- Blue Lock — 3,881,269 copies
- Kaiju No.8 — 3,398,326 copies
- Kingdom — 3,234,204 copies
- Haikyu!! — 3,077,085 copies
- My Hero Academia — 2,943,985 copies
- Spy x Family — 2,662,408 copies
Anime Adaptations Boosting Source Material Sales
Some new-gen anime that debuted this year such as Frieren Beyond Journey’s End, The Apothecary Diaries, and Kaiju No.8 made a lasting impression among the fans. Thanks to their successful anime adaptations, the sales for these manga were boosted automatically. You can see that these franchises have moved to the top of Oricon’s manga sales ranking.
Last year’s winner Blue Lock has slipped to the fifth position in sales, and it might drop in rankings next year due to the “unlikable” animation in Blue Lock Season 2. The Neo Egoist League arc in the manga is, however, exceptionally good and could save the manga sales from dipping. Moreover, the release of Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle (review) has also lifted its manga sales. Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia also concluded Deku’s story, so the manga maintained its rankings this year.
Finally, Kingdom and Spy x Family continued to maintain their reign in the top 10 manga rankings by switching places from last year.
I’m surprised to see last year’s winner Blue Lock lose its throne while the manga has been delivering great chapters consistently. Although I wanted to see One Piece at the top this year, Jujutsu Kaisen’s unreal stardom has helped the manga claim this year’s crown. Manga like Chainsaw Man and Oshi no Ko, which were in last year’s standing have dropped out of the top 10 this year.
Next year’s top-selling charts are going to be even more interesting as all the new-gen manga such as Dandadan, Frieren, and The Apothecary Diaries, among others are going to battle it out for the throne alongside One Piece. That said, what is the best manga you have read in 2024? Let us know in the comments below.
