2023 is drawing to a close, and it’s time to check out the year-end stats for all our favorite things. As such, for the world of manga, the top 10 hottest-selling manga of 2023 have been revealed by Oricon today. I’ve been picking up a lot of new manga to read this year and was so excited to see which one took the pole position, defeating all the other manga when it came to sales. Now that the day is here, and boosting its ego multi-fold is Blue Lock, which has emerged as the best-selling manga of 2023.
Blue Lock Reigns Supreme in Manga Sales!
Note: Before we move to the rankings, let us clarify that Oricon manga sales include sales from a large number of Japanese stores, but it does not include all the stores present in Japan. More importantly, it is important to note that Oricon only counts sales of physical copies of manga; digital copies are not included in their total sales.
Is it just me, or does everyone else also feel that the year 2023 flew by so fast, unlike any other year? Nevertheless, now that we’re stepping foot into the final month of 2023, it’s time to look at the total manga sales for the previous 12 months.
We have the final data from Oricon’s manga sales rankings for 2023 (Nov 21, 2022 to Nov 19, 2023). This data covers the sales of the most popular manga titles, like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, One Piece, and so on, but there is only one winner who reigns at the top, and it is Blue Lock!
Blue Lock’s characters are known for their egotistical ways to beat everyone and reach the top. And well, staying true to that philosophy, author Muneyuki Kaneshiro’s ego has also beaten the likes of Akutami and Oda to make Blue Lock the best-selling manga in 2023. It knocked out everyone in its path by selling more than 10 million copies this year. The second and third places are occupied by the Shonen beloveds, Jujutsu Kaisen, and the long-running One Piece series.
Here is a ranked list of the best-selling manga in 2023, all of which have been serialized in Shonen Jump:
Manga Title No. of Copies Sold Blue Lock 10,527,146 Jujutsu Kaisen 8,541,411 One Piece 7,197,532 Oshi no Ko 5,413,091 Chainsaw Man 5,348,618 Slam Dunk 4,968,484 Spy x Family 4,326,425 My Hero Academia 3,528,423 Tokyo Revengers 3,218,117 Kingdom 3,207,691
Blue Lock’s Rampage Might Not Stop Just Yet!
Earlier this year, during the first half of 2023, Oricon published a best-seller manga list for the first half, where we first noticed Blue Lock dominating the race. It seems like the craze is not ending any time soon, as Isagi, Rin, Bachira, and others fight for their survival on the global stage. The title of the most-sold manga in 2023 is now owned by “Blue Lock,” and expect this trend to continue next year.
Moreover, just as we predicted, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 with its stellar adaptation of Gojo’s Past in the first cour and the ongoing Shibuya Incident Arc adaptation in the second cour has boosted the manga sales further to claim the second position. The numbers will only go up as anime viewers are dealt some major shocks in the coming weeks.
Moving on, the conclusion of the Wano Country arc and the beginning of yet another stellar arc, the Egghead arc gave One Piece the boost we expected to make it into the Top 3. But it couldn’t sit at the top due to the release of just three volumes in 2023. Both Oshi no Ko and CSM’s debut seasons were well-received and caused waves, pulling in new fans to read the manga. Therefore, these two manga clinched the top 4 and 5 positions, respectively.
That concludes Oricon’s manga sales ranking for the year 2023. We were amazed but elated by these results because Blue Lock is not only mine but my editor’s top reads of 2023 as well. If you are yet to read the manga, I highly recommend you check it out and get ready to have your mind blown.
Apart from witnessing Isagi-kun and his enthusiasm to devour others, I have been juggling between One Piece, CSM, Kaiju No. 8, and Jujutsu Kaisen, witnessing the peak of fiction. Talking about peak fiction, Dandadan’s anime adaptation has been announced, and it will join this list once the anime airs next year. What is your favorite manga read in 2023?
