All Solo Leveling Hunters Who Died in the Jeju Island Raid

The Jeju Island arc has many parallels to the Chimera Ant arc in Hunter x Hunter, one of the best arcs in anime history, where the hunters of the respective worlds united to face the death-bringing ants. The very best hunters across the Solo Leveling universe put together a raid party to tackle the flesh-eating ants. Even though the raid party is full of S-Rank Hunters, unfortunately, the ants, and especially the Ant King, can be seen massacring some of the strongest hunters. So, if you are curious about the hunters who died during the Jeju Island Raid, this is the only guide you need.

Spoilers Warning: This article includes major spoilers for Solo Leveling. So, we highly recommend reading the manhwa or watching the anime in order to avoid ruining the intended experience.

Unlike any other arc, many character deaths occurred in the Jeju Island arc in Solo Leveling. With that said, here are the brave hunters who lost their lives during this raid:

1. Goto Ryuji

Although Goto Ryuji wasn’t a National Level hunter, he was still the strongest hunter in his nation, Japan. When the Japanese hunters were busy deserting the raid, the Ant King launched a surprise attack on Ryuji.

While Ryuji thought he could beat the Ant King in a fight, he was easily overpowered and instantly beheaded by the ant. In the end, he met the same fate as the rest of his guild members in the Jeju Island arc in Solo Leveling.

2. Min Byung-Gyu

When the Solo Leveling anime’s debut episode introduced fans to the world of hunters and guilds, Min Byung-Gyu was shown as one of the healers at the start. He was not a random healer as he was the only known healer to make it to S-rank at the time. Even though he was hesitant at first, Byung-Gyu joined the Jeju Island raid.

Min Byung-Gyu’s bad feeling at the beginning of the raid turned out to be right as this was the end of the road for his character. While he was healing his fellow hunters in their battle against the Ant Queen, the Ant King realized taking Byung-Gyu down would make things easier for the ants. As a result, he was feasted on by the Ant King and the ant inherited all his powers as well.

The S-Rank healer was reincarnated as one of Jinwoo’s strongest shadows to heal Cha Hae-In after the raid was over. When the job was done, Jinwoo granted Byung-Gyu’s wish to rest in peace instead of continuing to fight as a shadow. The nation of Korea suffered a big loss that day.

3. Mari Ishida

Mari Ishida was confirmed to be an S-Rank hunter but her class was never revealed in the story. She was a part of the Alpha Team led by guild master Goto Ryuji. Along with Goto and Minoru Hoshino, she was traumatized upon seeing the decapitated bodies of her fellow guild members.

However, the Ant King also cut her head before she could process what was going on. Only Minoru was fortunate to survive among the members of the Alpha Team.

4. Ippei Izawa

Ippei Izawa was an Assassin-type S-Rank hunter who was part of Team Delta. He wielded Bladed Tonfas and was doing well against the common ants. When Team Charlie went off the radar, Goto ordered Ippei’s team to check on the missing team.

Soon, they discovered that a monstrous creature had wiped out Team Charlie. Their fate was also sealed after visiting Team Charlie’s location. Ippei, along with his pal Kei, were immediately killed by the Ant King before they could inform the guild master of their findings.

5. Kei

Kei was a mage-type S-Rank hunter who partnered with Ippei to form Team Delta during the raid. Remember how Cha Hae-In had a very sensitive nose? Kei also shared the same skill as her, and that was the reason he was seen wearing a big gas mask.

As mentioned above, Kei and Ippei were ordered to check up on Team Charlie. During their investigation, they were pounced on by the Ant King. Although Kei tried to fight against the Ant King with his ice magic powers, it didn’t affect the beast and they were annihilated in an instant.

6. Akari Shimizu‎‎

Akin to Min Byung-Gyu, Akari Shimizu was an S-Rank healer from Japan. She was the only S-Rank healer other than Byung-Gyu. It was mentioned that she awakened as a hunter two years before the commencement of the ongoing Jeju Island raid. Although she doesn’t have much experience, she became an S-Rank healer within just two years, which is impressive.

Well, she was part of Team Charlie, one of the split teams of the Japanese hunters during the raid. Despite being a healer, Akari wielded a Battle Axe but even that couldn’t save her from the wrath of the Ant King as the monster caught her off guard and beheaded her.

7. Kenzo Tanaka

Kenzo Tanaka was an impulsive fighter-type S-Rank hunter. He was put in Team Charlie along with Tatsumi Fujishima and Akari Shimizu‎‎. He jumped the gun to slay the ants before he was given any orders. Sure he had some tremendous strength within him, but that was no match against the Ant King. Kenzo was taken out by the Ant King before he could do something to save his life.

8. Tatsumi Fujishima

Fujishima was another S-Rank hunter who lost his life before we could learn about his character or powers. He teamed up with Kenzo and Akari to form the Team Charlie. Unfortunately, his team was the first one to get completely obliterated by the Ant King. Tatsumi also shared the same fate as his crewmates as his head was severed within a blink.

Out of the 11 S-Rank Japanese hunters, seven were slain by the monstrous Ant King. In comparison, Korea only lost one of its S-Rank hunters, all thanks to Sung Jinwoo. Our hero saved the day by defeating the Ant King, who later became his shadow Beru. The losses were a heavy blow to both the nations, but the Jeju Island gate was closed at last.
