Telecom major Bharti Airtel has partnered with sister company, Bharti AXA Life Insurance, to offer an unique prepaid recharge plan that comes with life insurance cover for its customers. The insurance, being offered with Rs. 599 recharge vouchers, offers a cover of Rs. 4 lakh that remains active for the validity period of the voucher, which is 84 days.
As for the voucher itself, it brings 2GB of high-speed data alongside unlimited calls and 100 SMSes per day. To start off, the prepaid bundle is currently available only to customers in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, but it will reportedly be available across the country in the next few months, although, the exact dates are yet to be announced.
According to a joint press release from the companies, the innovative offering by Airtel and Bharti AXA Life Insurance combines the former’s deep distribution reach, including presence in rural pockets, with the latter’s expertise in insurance to make it simple for millions of uninsured and underinsured Indians to get a sizeable life insurance cover every time they recharge their mobile phones.
The benefit is available to all customers aged 18-54 years, and requires no paperwork or medical examination. However, a customer does have to enroll for the insurance after the first recharge through SMS, Airtel Thanks App or the Airtel Retailer. Once enrolled, the certificate of insurance will be digitally delivered to the registered number, while a physical copy will be delivered to customer’s doorstep on request.
As per Bharti Airtel, the insurance penetration in India is less than 4 percent (of the population) while mobile penetration is close to 90 percent, and the partnership is expected to increase insurance penetration in the country.
