Xiaomi Redmi 4, Redmi Note 4 Get AOSP-based Android Pie ROM

Just days after Google released Android 9 Pie for the Pixel and Pixel 2 lineups, a third-party developer has already ported the software to the Redmi Note 4, making it one of the first Xiaomi devices to have received the update, albeit, unofficially. According to XDA, a few other Xiaomi devices have also received the new ROM, including the Mi 3, the Mi 4 and the Redmi 4X, which is sold as the Redmi 4 in India.

The Android Pie update for the Redmi Note 4 is based on AOSP, and according to the developer, Abhishek987 from XDA Forums, all the features are working as expected. It doesn’t apparently have any known major bugs either, but since it’s still a work-in-progress, some issues might be reported as more people get the opportunity to test it out. Interested users can check out this thread on XDA to get more details about the new ROM and how to install it on the Redmi Note 4.

The Redmi Note 4 was released with Android Marshmallow out of the box, but has since received the Android Nougat update. Given Xiaomi’s track record, one would be inclined to believe that the device will also receive an official update to Android 9 Pie at some stage, although, there’s no confirmation of that at this point in time.

It’s worth noting here that the Redmi Note 4 was the best-selling smartphone in India last year across segments, helping Xiaomi edge past Samsung as the largest smartphone vendor in the country. The Chinese company, however, has since relinquished that position to the South Korean giant even as it continues to grow its sales volumes by leaps and bounds.
