Seven Deadly Sins is one of the beloved shonen animanga series that is still watched by many fans around the world. In line with the shonen series, The Seven Deadly Sins was already turned into a turn-based RPG game by Netmarble before. The Seven Deadly Sins: Grandcross was a blockbuster hit among fans, and now the same Netmarble studios have come up with another Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, which has been in development for a long time. Ahead of the game’s premiere next year, we were invited to try out the game in a recent closed beta test. As a result, I was lucky enough to make my way back to Britannia, but this time as Meliodas’ son. So, here are my first impressions of the next big Seven Deadly Sins Origin.
Spoilers Warning:
This article contains minor spoilers about the story of Seven Deadly Sins series. Proceed with caution.
Rediscover Britannia Through the Eyes of Prince Tristan

The previous game, 7DS: Grand Cross, retold the fan favorite tale of Meliodas by faithfully adapting the story from the manga. Returning to Origin, this is a completely original storyline penned for the game with the help of author Nakaba Suzuki. You might have already met Prince Tristan of Liones in the 7DS anime; now, Meliodas’s son continues the legacy by leading the tale in Origin.
The peace in Britannia is disrupted when a legendary artifact known as ‘The Book of Stars’ emerges out of the blue and turns the world upside down. The Britannia we knew and grew up in is no longer the same, as the artifact suddenly alters the landscapes forever. Characters, things, landscapes, etc, from multiple timelines converge into a multiversal land in Seven Deadly Sins Origin.
Therefore, as Prince Tristan, you set out on an adventure with an ever-growing party to put an end to the multiversal disruptions and restore your homeland to the peaceful kingdom it was previously. This storyline is taking place between the events of 7DS and Four Knights of the Apocalypse, bridging the gap between the prequel and sequel. We don’t know if the new tale in Origin is completely canon at the moment, so let’s wait until the game’s launch next year.
What’s in Store? Gameplay and All You Need to Know

For those who aren’t aware, The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is an open-world ARPG game, taking a break from the turn-based gameplay in the previous game, Grand Cross. You will be on your feet as Tristan to investigate the anomalies in the various places of Britannia. Thus, you will be spending most of your time exploring the kingdoms, dungeons, and many lands in Britannia, along with fighting the diverse set of monsters that have begun to infest these lands.
Rich and Tempting Open-World
Exploring your favorite fantasy land is absolutely enjoyable. Netmarble has recreated the majority of the locations we have visited during our time with the anime and manga. You can visit and explore various places, such as the Kingdom of Liones, Fairy King’s Forest, and many more. There are several locations that we couldn’t access during CBT, as they seemed to open later on as you make your progress through the story.
And there are various modes of travel you can ride, from Hawk to owl, to traverse across these lands. On top of it, several characters have specific traversal-oriented skills that come in handy during travel as well.
Making progress in the story isn’t the only goal here. You can also take a break and explore the exquisite beauty of the landscape, or go fishing, as there are plenty of fun side quests and activities to do.
Blazing Link-Up Combat
The biggest highlight of The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin was its incredible link-up combat system. First of all, you can roll your luck and unlock new heroes through the game’s gacha system. You can make a party of four different characters and can switch between them in combat. I went with Tristan, Tioreh, Howzer, and Daisy for most of the time. There are familiar faces from the canon world, and there are those original ones created specifically for the game. So you can choose anyone as you like and create different teams.
Next up, each hero has three weapon slots, and this is where things get exciting. You can choose different weapons in each slot to completely switch the playstyle of your favorite hero. For example, as Tristan, you can equip dual blades, a greatsword, or a normal sword. Depending on the weapon and the affinity it has, you can switch to a totally different playstyle if you ever get bored with one.
And the next feature that made the combat so electrifying for me is the combo attacks as you switch between characters in your party, and the special combined ultimate moves. Those are always a delight to pull off against a swarm of enemies or a boss.
Drawbacks That Need to Be Addressed

Although I enjoyed most of my time with the game, there are several factors that I couldn’t overlook, and let’s go through them one by one. First of all, I was so excited to play as Meliodas. He wasn’t available from the get-go, as you need to win him by spinning the gacha machine. Even after many attempts, I still couldn’t land the hero I wanted and was repeatedly getting the ones I received earlier. The new character drop rate can be improved in the final build. Because I was getting enough free currency to try my luck during the closed beta test, and this won’t be the same when the full game releases.
Next up, since I was so intrigued by the story setup, I found myself doing main missions more than doing side quests in my initial playthrough. The quests started to feel repetitive over time, and even the puzzle sections were fairly simple to solve. So, I hope there are a variety of missions in the complete version of the game, along with more exciting puzzles to solve using The Book of Stars.
Lastly, I found that the leveling-up experience was somewhat challenging (even with the auto mastery option) as the requirements quickly proliferated over time. Despite not having any problems most of the time, there was a sudden difficulty fight, especially during the boss fight of Draco King Drake. So, these are my current concerns that pull you back from enjoying the story, and I hope the developers can ease them in the game’s final build.
Graphics and PC Performance

The CBT of Seven Deadly Sins: Origin was open for both PS5 and PC. Here are the specs of my setup on which we played the beta on PC via Steam:
My Setup:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D @4.20 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti SUPER
RAM: 32 GB (2×16) DDR5 @6000MHz
SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 1TB
Monitor: Alienware 32 4K QD-OLED Gaming Monitor – AW3225QF @240Hz
As usual, Netmarble has done a great PC port for this game. The game boasts incredible visuals where the beloved characters and locations are brought to life in an ideal art style. One can even say that you will get to see brilliant animations that surpass season 3 of 7DS. Regarding performance, the game ran smoothly without any issues in both the open world and closed sections.
However, there was one constant problem I ran into every time. Whenever I tried to utilize an item from the quick slot, especially healing potions, my screen froze for a few seconds before returning to normal. So, I hope these minor issues can be resolved during the complete release next year.
Final Verdict: Ready to Step Into the Shoes of Prince Tristan

After spending a fair amount of time in The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin CBT, it is suffice to say that this game is catered for 7DS enthusiasts and will brightly appeal to them. Even if you are a newcomer who isn’t familiar with the world and characters of 7DS, it will still be an enjoyable adventure for you as the game features a completely original story.
As I mentioned earlier, several issues hinder the experience, such as repetitive quest designs and overly slow character progression. However, with an intriguing story and compelling combat system, the game easily draws you in to explore Britannia and unravel the mystery surrounding it. Those who are looking forward to experiencing only the new tale of Prince Tristan in the 7DS universe (like me) will, unfortunately, end up having a grindy ride.
On the other hand, if you are an experienced gacha gaming enthusiast and a 7DS fan, get ready to sink a significant amount of time into this game and embark on a grindy yet adventurous journey with Tristan and his friends. The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is slated to release on January 28, 2026, and will be available on Android, iOS, PC (Steam), and PS5.
Therefore, I’m looking forward to immersing myself in Tristan’s journey of restoring peace when the full game releases. In the meantime, if you were able to try the game during the CBT, let us know how your experience was in the comments below.
