Qual

  • Epithet: The Elder Sage of Corruption
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Unknown
  • Debut: Episode 3, Chapter 5

Remember the killer Zoltraak magic spell used by Frieren, Fern, and many others? Qual created it, the very first big demon threat we encountered in the series. He terrorised the Größe Forest in the Central Lands for a long time. He wasn’t part of the Seven Sages of Destruction but was a loyal follower of the Demon King. Since the era of the Demon King’s rule, Qual has been striking fear into humans with his Zoltraak spell.

At that time, the mages weren’t able to hold their defences against his Zotraak magic. Then, when the Hero Party encountered Qual, he couldn’t be defeated, and Frieren had to seal him using a spell. These incidents reveal a great deal about the incredible magic he possessed. However, when he came back years later, Frieren was in a better position (with all the new studies of modern human magic), and she put an end to the Elder Sage’s life with his own Zoltraak attack.

Tot

  • Epithet: Saint of the End
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Greater Demon
  • Debut: Episode TBD, Chapter 116

Tot, aka the Saint of the End, is one of the newest demons we met in the recent arcs of the Frieren manga. She is considered one of the Greater Demons, yet the demon herself remarked that she isn’t the typical fighting demon that we have encountered so far. So, what is her special power that qualifies her as one of the strongest demons?

It has to do with her lethal magic curse in the making. Tot mentioned that her curse will spread throughout the planet and is currently 30% complete. We don’t know many details about this curse, but it does sound like a world-ending curse that must be stopped from spreading at all costs. Tot also appears to be a brains-over-brawns type of demon, so we await more of her actions in the series.

Aura

  • Epithet: The Guillotine
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Greater Demon, Seven Sages of Destruction
  • Debut: Episode 8, Chapter 14

Aura was the second biggest challenge for Frieren after Qual in the first season. She was part of the Seven Sages of Destruction, which hinted at the unreal magical power she possessed. If you ever wondered where the name Aura the Guillotine came from, it has to do with her Spell of Obedience: Auserlese. Aura always carried a scale with her and used her special spell to weigh her mana and her opponent.

The rules of this spell allowed whoever held the largest amount of mana to take control of their opponent’s body. For over 500 years, Aura always won the gamble, beheaded her enemies, and turned them into her headless soldiers. Though she may have escaped her execution from the Hero’s Party in the past, Frieren used Aura’s own spell against her and decapitated her head years later.

Bose

  • Epithet: The Immortal
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Greater Demon, Seven Sages of Destruction
  • Debut: Episode 28, Chapter 59

All the Seven Sages of Destruction easily earn a seat in the list of the strongest demons, and Bose secured his place with his knack for creating unbreakable barriers. Yes! Bose the Immortal was an expert in barrier magic, whose barriers cannot be destroyed by humans, according to Frieren.

Bose didn’t live up to his name as he was no immortal. Frieren and her party shattered his barriers and neutralised him under his own. So, Bose may not have been around for a long time, as his epithet suggests, but his indestructible barrier magic makes him one of the strongest demons we have ever seen.

Rivale

  • Epithet: The Bloody God of War
  • Class: Warrior
  • Rank: Greater Demon, Demon General
  • Debut: Episode TBD, Chapter 116

As the title suggests, Rivale, the Bloody God of War, is not a mage but a warrior from the demons. In fact, he is known to be the strongest warrior from the demon side, and we got to see his might in his battle against Eisen in the flashback. He is a master hand-to-hand combatant, but he is also highly proficient in wielding any form of weapon.

That’s where his special power, Weapon Regeneration, comes in handy. Rivale can craft the weapon he desires using his mana, and he can instantly use it in his battles. He has fought against his opponents with an axe, spear, etc so far and showcased his skills. It’s always refreshing to see a demon who isn’t a mage, and Rivale is the best example of that case.

Grausam

  • Epithet: The Miraculous
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Greater Demon, Seven Sages of Destruction
  • Debut: Episode TBD, Chapter 89

A character who is capable of meddling with their opponents’ mental state is always a dangerous and powerful one to run into. Grausam the Miraculous exactly wielded the mental magic abilities. He could manipulate his body, conjure illusions to trick opponents, and even rewrite memories.

That was why he was promoted to become one of the seven sages of destruction to continue serving the Demon King. So, Grausam was the worst demon to run into if you are psychologically weak, despite possessing ridiculous strength. But the Hero Party was able to bypass his mental magic and defeated him in their journey to vanquish the Demon King.

Solitär

  • Epithet: Nameless Greater Demon
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Greater Demon
  • Debut: Episode TBD, Chapter 88

Although she never became a member of the Seven Sages of Destruction, Solitar possessed all the powers to become one in the story. The Nameless Greater Demon was so interested in conducting experiments on all living beings. Similar to Aura, all who faced Solitar in the past were perished in their battle.

All of Solitar’s experiments on humans benefited her as she slowly became an expert in human magic and even taught Macht the same. But more than that, Solitar was a level above her peers when it came to possession of mana and precise control of it. Thus, she came up with both offensive attacks, such as mana blades, mana burst strike, and in defence by creating mana shields as well.

Macht

  • Epithet: Macht of the Golden Land
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Greater Demon, Seven Sages of Destruction
  • Debut: Episode TBD, Chapter 77

Macht of the Golden Land is one of the very few demons who has defeated Frieren in the past. By far, he is the only demon regarded as the most powerful amongst the Seven Sages of Destruction. Macht was extremely strong in all aspects of his physical and mana levels. But his signature move is the all-powerful curse, Diagoldze.

Inspired by Midas’ Touch in the Greek Mythology, Macht can transform anything into gold and use it to his advantage. In addition, Macht also learned human magic from Solitar, so he is quite good at that as well. All in all, Macht is indeed the real deal among the demons currently in the story.

Schlact

Schlacht in Frieren manga
Image Credit: Jump Comics (via Fandom/Frieren Wiki)
  • Epithet: The Omniscient
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: Confidant
  • Debut: Episode 30, Chapter 63

The great Demon King had a right-hand man named Schlact, who was only revealed halfway through the story. Schlact earned the omniscient title, being blessed with the ability to see thousand years into the future. Therefore, Schlact essentially saw all the infinite possibilities a thread of the future carries.

Not much is known about his other set of abilities, but he served as the Demon King’s confidant until the end. He fought against the Hero of the South, who was the strongest hero of humanity. Thus, Schlact was rightfully the most powerful demon to have ever lived after the Demon King himself in Frieren.

Demon King

  • Epithet: The Demon King
  • Class: Mage
  • Rank: King
  • Debut: Episode 1, Chapter 1

Many years have passed, and even after 100+ chapters, only a little is known about the Demon King to this day. Although we haven’t witnessed the exact powers of the Demon King, one thing we know for sure is that he was their king for a reason. He has led the demon army and fought against the rest of the world for over a thousand years.

Eventually, the Hero Party, which Frieren was part of, defeated him; however, it is hinted that the Demon King was an insurmountable threat to overcome throughout the story. Therefore, the king of the demons is by far the strongest demon in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. It seems like no one will dethrone him for the time being, so let’s look forward to seeing him in action in the manga soon.

These are our top picks for the 10 strongest demons in the Frieren series. Not all the demon’s origins and complete powers have been revealed in the Frieren manga so far. In addition, the manga has been constantly going on an indefinite hiatus due to the health issues of the authors. So, we should patiently wait until more revelation happens in the source material.
