Google’s latest flagship smartphones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are unarguably the best smartphones to take breathtaking pictures. In fact, they have the highest rated camera ever in a smartphone, with an astonishing DxOMark score of 98. It even managed to outright beat the dual-camera setups on the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus with just a single camera. That’s not to say that the camera on the new Pixel 2 is flawless. If the issues that already damaged the first impressions of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL weren’t enough, there’s one more to be added to the long list.
Apparently, some Pixel 2 cameras are exhibiting weird behavior while trying to take a still or record a video under LED lighting. According to a few Pixel 2 owners, the camera starts to flicker and displays major banding, something which is quite noticeable to the extent that it manages to easily disrupt the quality of the image. Users have been quick enough to use last year’s Pixel for comparison, in order to showcase the issue. This could potentially boil down to the fact that LEDs don’t emit stable light. Instead they flicker, and that’s probably why the Pixel 2’s cameras are exhibiting this issue, but at the same time, it’s also worth noting that other high-end flagships don’t really face this problem at all.
There has been a huge discussion regarding this issue at Pixel User Community thread, and the problem has also been escalated to the Pixel 2 team by a Google representative. This is a major blow to the tech giant’s Pixel 2 line-up, especially due to the fact that despite all the issues the smartphones have been facing, the camera was still one great reason to purchase it. Now, that doesn’t really seem to be the case.
