The Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, more popularly known as the Paw Paw fruit in One Piece, is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. It transforms the user into a Paw Human capable of repelling absolutely anything they lay their hands on. On the surface, it may appear as just a repelling power, but trust us, there is more to this devil fruit than that.

Zoan and Logia devil fruits might get all the attention from the fans, but some of the strongest devil fruits you will ever find in One Piece fall under the Paramecia class. Nikyu Nikyu no Mi stands tall among other formidable paramecia-type devil fruits such as Gura Gura no Mi, Ope Ope no Mi, Nomi Nomi no Mi, etc.

It was revealed in the God Valley Incident flashback that Nikyu Nikyu no Mi was one of the prizes to be awarded to the winners of the Native Hunting Competition celebrated by the Celestial Dragons. Kuma, who was brought as one of the huntable slaves, teamed up with Emporio Ivankov and Ginny to escape from the island. Together, they planned to escape the violence-stricken island by snatching the devil fruits in the treasure boxes.

They found the prizes, but Ivankov failed to consume the Uo Uo no Mi Model: Seiryu as Big Mom swooped it from his hand. On the other hand, Kuma successfully stole and consumed the Paw Paw devil fruit. With the powers of the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, Kuma escaped the island and rescued over five hundred lives.

Bartholomew Kuma remains the user of Paw Paw fruit to this day. Kuma has always wanted to free people from their pains, and he received the Paw Paw fruit as a manifestation of his will. Thus, people deservedly called Kuma’s paws the “Hands of Liberation.”

Paw Paw Devil Fruit’s Powers and Abilities

The basic ability of the Paw Paw devil fruit is to repel, and Kuma has utilized it masterfully in both attack and defense to make it one of the most versatile devil fruit powers. For starters, Kuma pushes away his foes with his palms, creates powerful paw-shaped shockwaves, and bombs in attack. The Paw Paw fruit’s defensive powers also shine bright, as the paws can be used to deflect any kind of incoming attack.

In addition, the repelling can be used by users to thrust themselves to a desired location at very high speeds, almost resembling a teleportation ability, but it’s not one. Kuma is also capable of pushing other characters to a different location, like during the time he sent the Straw Hats away. But note that the user can only send them to a place he has previously visited once in their life.

Another important ability of the Nikyu Nikyu is that it can be used to push out people’s pain, suffering, and memories. While the memories may remain intact, the expelled sufferings and memories must be absorbed by someone else, or they will inevitably revert to the original individual. Remember when Zoro absorbed all of Luffy’s pain? Kuma has been doing that numerous times in his life when he treated the elderly people of the Sorbet Kingdom.

Paw Paw Fruit’s Strengths

  • The user can deflect and counter any attack by repelling it at the right time.
  • The user can make use of the air around them to produce shockwaves and bombs.
  • The user can teleport themselves or send anyone else to a location.
  • Extract people’s pain or suffering from their bodies.

Paw Paw Fruit’s Weaknesses

  • The user can only send the others to a location they have visited before.
  • The ejected pain and suffering will return to the host if left alone.
  • Need to be fast and precise all the time to deflect the attacks.

Neither Kuma has awakened his Paw Paw fruit in the story yet, nor has Oda hinted at the awakening so far. However, it would be interesting to see what the awakening of Nikyu Nikyu no Mi will add to the already broken Devil Fruit.
