In Short
  • The new Minecraft trailer reveals Steve's origin story and shows Jack Black discovering the game's blocky world.
  • The trailer is packed with authentic game features: Redstone builds, mob interactions, and a day-night cycle.
  • The movie releases on April 2025 and features Jason Momoa and a star-studded cast.

The highly anticipated Minecraft movie has just dropped its second official trailer, offering fans a deeper look into the blocky world of gaming’s most popular sandbox adventure. The new trailer focuses on Steve’s origin story while showing off more game-accurate features that weren’t seen in the first teaser.

Steve’s Origin Story Takes Center Stage

The new trailer opens featuring a clapperboard and the line “Minecraft trailer, take two,” addressing the mixed reception to September’s teaser. We’re then introduced to young Steve, whose childhood fascination with mining shapes his destiny. Despite being forbidden from entering a mine as a child, adult Steve (played by Jack Black) eventually discovers a portal that transports him into the cubic wonderland of the Minecraft universe.

The trailer brings back memories of those first Minecraft adventures. We see Steve placing dirt blocks and missing spots – something I can relate to. There’s wolf taming with bones and the creation of basic tools.

While many video game movies struggle to please fans, A Minecraft Movie seems to get what makes the game special. From dangerous nighttime monsters to familiar items like Ender Pearls and the original game music, the film looks to capture what players love about Minecraft. And yes, there’s even a perfectly timed Ender Pearl teleportation gag that shows these filmmakers have done their homework.

The film brings together an impressive Minecraft movie cast. Alongside Black and Momoa, we’ve got Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy), and Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus).

For those unaware, the story follows four misfits who are transported to the Overworld through a mysterious portal. Together with Steve, they must protect this cubic realm from threats like Piglins and Zombies while discovering their own creative potential.

A Minecraft Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 2, 2025, internationally, with a US release following on April 4. The new trailer suggests a production that understands and respects the feedback of its audience. With its blend of nostalgia, adventure, and game-accurate details, A Minecraft Movie might just be the next successful video game adaptation.
