Dabi’s Fate: Is He Dead or Alive in My Hero Academia?

Dabi, originally known as Toya Todoroki, is a tragic character in the My Hero Academia series who ended up on the villains’ side due to his father’s neglectful upbringing. When he was a kid, Dabi almost died after he unleashed his uncontrollable flames. But AFO rescued him and manipulated him to be reborn as Dabi, who has the sole purpose of bringing down his father, Endeavor. Dabi vs the Todoroki Family in the Final War in MHA

Ever since Toya rose from the ashes as Dabi, he has been dead set on setting ablaze his father, his loved ones, and his reputation in the story. Hence, although he was assisting AFO and the League of Villains to take down the heroes and snatch the One For All quirk from Deku, his main goal was to obliterate his father. In the final war, Dabi first had to deal with his brother Shoto Todoroki at Kamino Ward.

The two brothers had their much-needed chat, but it was not enough to convince Dabi to let go of his goals and death wish. The two brothers battled it out on Kamino Ward, and Shoto outsmarted his elder brother. Though Shoto thought he defeated Dabi with the Great Glacial Aegir move, his brother instantly replicated his Flashfire Fist: Phosphor move and reawakened from a frozen state.

Upon regaining his strength, Dabi knew that his brother would eventually put an end to him if the battle continued. So he immediately got the intel on his father’s location from Skeptic and rushed through the warp gate to the ruins of the Gunga Mountain Villa, where his father was fighting against a prime AFO.

Dabi was Left Severely Injured After Fighting His Family

Dabi trained and prepared his whole life to confront his father in the final war. This is his best chance to get his revenge, and so Dabi didn’t waste any time. In fact, Dabi transformed himself into a ticking nuclear bomb upon his entry by cramming his blue flames into his body. Dabi didn’t give anyone the time to react to his nuclear threat, as he was set to explode everything in a 5km radius in just ten minutes.

Not only were Pro Heroes present, but also many civilians were hiding in the vicinity, which Dabi was about to erase from the map. Dabi never listened to his father’s pleas to stop hurting people. As Endeavor realized that it was his fault that Dabi ended up this way, he chose to carry his son to a faraway place and let fate claim both the father’s and son’s lives as the bomb exploded.

Unexpectedly, Rei, Dabi’s mother, arrived to help her husband and son by beginning to emit her ice. Soon, Fuyumi and Natsuo also joined them in an attempt to use their icy powers to cool off their son’s ticking bomb. Following the Todoroki family members, Shoto arrived right in time to unleash his Great Glacier Aegir attack move and defeated his brother once and for all this time.

Shoto’s unlocked Aegir attack absorbed the uncontrollable fire and extinguished it to stop his brother from exploding. Without his family’s help, this wouldn’t have been possible, and Dabi is finally arrested in a half-frozen state. Dabi didn’t ultimately die in the final war, and he was given the necessary treatment to keep him alive after everything he did.

Dabi Dies in the Epilogue Arc of My Hero Academia

Even though Dabi survived the final war, his fate didn’t allow him to continue to live on. As you know, Dabi was in a critical condition after his family prevented him from exploding. Therefore, he had to be placed in a life-support chamber to live on, albeit for a short period. Dabi’s grudge against his father kept him alive all these years, but it couldn’t anymore, as he was in a state beyond saving at this point.

The Todoroki family visited him to make amends with the long-lost son during this time as well. However, it is noted that Dabi died in his medical pod due to the injuries he sustained around eight years after the final war. Dabi’s death happened off-screen and was never explicitly shown in the source material.
