The Sulfur Cube isn’t just another little slime mob in Minecraft, but an entity with varying physical properties. It’s the new archetype system that truly sets this mob apart from others. It makes the Sulfur Cube behave differently based on the block it absorbs. The mob acts like a dynamic object on consuming blocks, adding more bounce, reducing friction, and affecting air drag. So, let’s check out all the Sulfur Cube archetypes in Minecraft and how they affect the mob.
Editor’s Note: The working of the Sulfur Cube and its archetypes are based on Minecraft 26.2 snapshots. The archetypes and their functionality can change at launch, so check back for the latest updates.
What are Sulfur Cube Archetypes in Minecraft?
Before the Minecraft Chaos Cubed update rolls out, it is essential to understand what an archetype is when talking about Sulfur Cubes. An archetype is essentially a physics preset applied to the mob when it absorbs a specific block.
The archetypes determine how fast the cube moves when hit, the bounciness, whether it can float on water, and more, as revealed by Mojang. Moreover, the archetypes have two types: standard and special. Currently, at the time of writing, there are three special archetypes in Minecraft 26.2.

Minecraft Sulfur Cube Archetypes Breakdown
As mentioned above, each Sulfur Cube archetype has its unique characteristic in Minecraft. Here is the complete breakdown of each archetype, along with what blocks the mob needs to consume, the properties exhibited, and more:
Regular Archetype
- Speed: Medium
- Bounciness: Medium
- Ground Friction: Medium
- Air Drag: Low
- Blocks: All stone and mineral blocks
The Regular archetype is the most common behaviour that you will encounter when Sulfur Cube consumes a block in the game. This is activated when the mob absorbs blocks that are not listed under other archetypes, especially stone and mineral-based blocks.
In this state, the cube offers a balanced mix of speed, bounce, and friction, making it easier to predict and control. This is neither too fast nor too slow, and can also float in liquids, making it useful in water-based setups.
Bouncy Archetype
- Speed: Fast
- Bounciness: High
- Ground Friction: Medium
- Air Drag: Low
- Blocks: Planks, Bamboo Mosaic, Logs, Stripped Logs, Wood, Stripped Wood, Block of Bamboo, Block of Stripped Bamboo, Block of Resin (BE), Resin Bricks (BE), and Chiseled Resin Bricks (BE)
When you feed the Sulfur Cube wooden blocks like logs, planks, stripped wood blocks, or bamboo, it gains the Bouncy archetype. This is where things start to get fun. The Sulfur slime cube becomes highly elastic and can bounce aggressively off surfaces, travelling at high speeds.
The Sulfur Cube almost becomes a rubber ball, and you can even make your own pinball mini-game in Minecraft. Moreover, it remains buoyant and can float across the water’s surface without sinking immediately. You can make use of this mob in several of the best Minecraft redstone builds.
Slow Flat Archetype
- Speed: Slow
- Bounciness: Low
- Ground Friction: Medium
- Air Drag: Medium
- Blocks: Block of Iron, Block of Gold, Block of Raw Copper, Block of Raw Gold, Block of Raw Iron, Gold Ore, Nether Gold Ore, Iron Ore, Copper Ore, Block of Netherite, Ancient Debris (JE), Block of Copper, Copper Bulb, Cut Copper, and Chiseled Copper
When Sulfur Cubes consume metal blocks like iron, gold (see Minecraft gold level), or copper, they have the Slow Flat archetype. Instead of ricocheting, the cube becomes heavily grounded. It moves slowly with minimal bounce, and the distance travelled is short when you push it.
Furthermore, Slow Flat cubes completely sink in water, emphasizing their sheer weight and density. This is ideal for Minecraft builds where you want to use a block as an obstacle rather than a playful projectile.
Fast Flat Archetype
- Speed: Fast
- Bounciness: Low
- Ground Friction: Medium
- Air Drag: Low
- Blocks: Coral Blocks, Dead Coral Blocks, Sponge, Wet Sponge, Dried Kelp Block, Moss Block, Pale Moss Block, Block of Resin (JE), Resin Bricks (JE), Chiseled Resin Bricks (JE), Pumpkin, Melon, Hay Bale, Carved Pumpkin, Jack o’Lantern (JE), Froglights, Slime Block (BE), Honey Block (BE), and Sculk (BE)
Organic blocks primarily consist of Minecraft food sources, like pumpkin, melons, coral and moss blocks, and dried kelp. When the Sulfur Cube mob consumes any of these, it will have the Fast Flat archetype. This variant strikes a balance between speed and control but is different from the Regular archetype.
With this archetype, the Sulfur Cube moves quickly but with low bounce. So it tends to glide across surfaces instead of ricocheting everywhere, making it perfect for a controlled Minecraft farm where you know the position the Sulfur Slime will end up.
Light Archetype
- Speed: Slow
- Bounciness: High
- Ground Friction: Medium
- Air Drag: High
- Blocks: Wool
When a Sulfur Cube consumes any Minecraft wool block, it shows the Light archetype. It offers a completely different experience compared to other block types. This Sulfur Cube archetype makes them move with reduced gravity and high air drag. The mob doesn’t just bounce but lingers in the air.
Because of its buoyancy, it performs well in environments where vertical motion matters. Consider using Sulfur Cubes with this attribute in Minecraft parkour maps to make floating platforms that disappear in a few seconds.
Fast Sliding Archetype
- Speed: Fast
- Bounciness: No
- Ground Friction: Low
- Air Drag: Low
- Blocks: Blue Ice, Packed Ice, Snow Block, and Ice (BE)
Upon absorbing ice-based blocks, such as packed ice or snow blocks, the Sulfur Cube can transform into a Fast Sliding archetype. This is where friction, or the lack of it, becomes the defining factor for the cube. The mob slides rapidly across the surface since friction is minimal in this case.
Fast Sliding Sulfur Cubes rarely bounce and can cover more ground once it gains momentum. This makes it useful for creating curling mini games and holding tournaments with your friends.
Slow Sliding Archetype
- Speed: Slow
- Bounciness: No
- Ground Friction: Low
- Air Drag: Low
- Blocks: Brown Mushroom Block, Red Mushroom Block, Mushroom Stem, Mycelium, Nether Wart Block, Warped Wart Block, and Shroomlight
The Slow Sliding archetype is applied when the Sulfur Cube mobs consume blocks related to fungus and mushrooms in Minecraft. These include the red mushrooms, brown mushrooms, stems, or even the mycelium blocks. Unlike its fast counterpart, this version slides slowly with a minimal bounce.
Because it slides without generating excessive momentum, it is highly manageable and perfect for redstone setups that require predictable motion. So, you can use Slow Sliding cubes in setups that require predictive sliding mechanics. Moreover, note that this block can sink in water, indicating its heavyweight.
High Resistance Archetype
- Speed: Very Slow
- Bounciness: Low
- Ground Friction: High
- Air Drag: Low
- Blocks: Soul Sand and Soul Soil
The Soul Sand and Soul Soil blocks grant the Sulfur Cubes the special High Resistance archetype. In this state, the mobs become extremely difficult to move, barely bounce, have high friction, and resist most forms of knockback.
This makes it perfect for situations where you want the Sulfur Cube to stay put and almost acts like an anchored object. Moreover, it can also sink in water, which further emphasises its dense nature.
Sticky Archetype
- Speed: Medium
- Bounciness: None
- Ground Friction: High
- Air Drag: Low
- Blocks: Honeycomb Block
The Sticky archetype is another special Sulfur Cube archetype and is the most distinctive of all. It is triggered when the slime mob absorbs the honeycomb block in Minecraft. Now, instead of bouncing or sliding, the cube sticks tightly to surfaces, with extremely high friction and zero bounce.
This sticky nature makes this Sulfur Cube block ideal for locations in builds where you want things to stay in one position and trapdoors to hide your valuable diamonds in Minecraft.
Explosive Archetype
- Speed: Medium
- Bounciness: Medium
- Ground Friction: Medium
- Air Drag: Medium
- Blocks: TNT Block
When a Sulfur Cube consumes a Minecraft TNT block, it inherits all of its explosive properties. This way, when you interact with the mob using Flint and Steel, light it on fire, keep it near an explosion, or use a Redstone signal adjacent to it, then the TNT block enters a primed state.
When a Sulfur Cube with the Explosive archetype is manually ignited using fire or Redstone, the mob has a 6-second fuse time before exploding. Whereas the fuse time is random, between 0.75 seconds and 3 seconds, when the cube is exposed to another explosion.
At the time of writing, these are all the Sulfur Cube archetypes available in Minecraft. The devs are currently testing the upcoming Minecraft 26.2 update and adding new archetypes based on player feedback. So, have you explored the Sulfur Cube trick that lets you reach the End faster? Do share your experience with Sulfur Cubes in the comments below.
Yes, to switch the archetypes, first use shears to remove the current block, then feed it the block for the archetype you want.
When a Sulfur Cube has absorbed a block and has a particular archetype, it becomes resistant to most damage in Minecraft.
