You must have heard a bizarre new name, i.e. Master Tengen, in the latest season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen. While anime-only fans continue to wonder what kind of character they are, manga fans know them well. Master Tengen is heavily connected with the Star Plasma Vessel and plays a vital role in the future of the Jujutsu world. They play a mysterious character and their powers guard the Jujutsu society. Who is Master Tengen in Jujutsu Kaisen

Master Tengen is a Jujustu Sorcerer in JJK, and “Immortality” is their innate Jujutsu technique. They are also referred to as the Star in the Jujutsu-verse. Although their technique allows them to keep living forever, it doesn’t provide them the look of perpetual youth. Hence, this immortal sorcerer has been around for a long time.

And as we know, they had a significant background impact on most of the plot. They were formerly in charge of propagating the principles of Jujutsu sorcerers from the Nara period. And from then, they built the foundation of Jujutsu in this world.

Master Tengen’s primary form was a human being in Jujutsu Kaisen. After failing to merge with Star Plasma Vessel Riko Amanai, as seen in Gojo’s Past Arc, Tengen had undergone the “evolution” process. Therefore, they are now seen as a cursed spirit with a cylindrical head and four eyes.

Master Tengen’s current gender is unknown, but they used to be a female in the past, as we can see in the above image. Moreover, they also referred to themselves as “granny” in the current timeline in manga Chapter 202.

Master Tengen’s role and their Immortality technique are vital for passing down and protecting Jujutsu as it always has been. JJK Master Tengen: Powers & Abilities

Tengen is not a combatant Jujutsu sorcerer like Gojo. They are a far different sorcerer, who is primarily non-combatant, as they don’t like to use Jujutsu for fighting. As a result, Master Tengen remains non-belligerent and uniquely uses his barrier techniques. Lord Tengen is the most powerful barrier user in Jujutsu history, as they are more adept at using barrier techniques than any other sorcerer here. With these techniques, he shaped the Jujutsu society and remains essential to them throughout centuries, as mentioned earlier.

There are four main barriers surrounding Jujutsu High and Tengen Sama has enhanced them. According to manga Chapter 136, Tengen’s barriers are necessary for optimizing cursed energy throughout the Jujutsu Kaisen world. So you can understand how they are distinct yet powerful. The various barrier techniques utilized by Master Tengen are:

• Concealing Barriers: A barrier that controls more than 1000+ shifting doors and guards the entry of the Tomb of the Star Corridor.
• Jujutsu High Barriers: Barriers at the Jujutsu High sites alter their designs every day to conceal the school from the public.
• Pure Barriers: A barrier of an advanced form whose priority is to increase the accuracy of Master Tengen’s cursed spirit suppression technique and the barrier techniques used by teachers and managers of Jujutsu High.
• Empty Barriers: They are entirely empty barriers as the name suggests and are used in different cases.

While these barrier techniques sound cool, keep in mind that Tengen mainly conceals the presence of something (for example, the Jujutsu High sorcerers using barriers when fighting curses). But if one knows the location, it is always easier for them to infiltrate these barriers.

Tengen’s Current Status in Jujutsu Kaisen

When Master Tengen was captured by Kenjaku, it was the last time we saw them in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. In the last panel of Chapter 208, we see Tengen-sama curled up like a baby in a womb. Now, their whereabouts and current status are unknown, but JJK creator Gege Akutami did reveal to us Kenjaku’s plan for Tengen.

Kenjaku plans to attain evolution by merging the sorcerer supreme with all of humanity. We also see Tengen-sama reveal the same in JJK manga chapter 145, but the merger is yet to kick off, possibly due to the ongoing spat between Gojo vs Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen. How is it possible, you ask? Well, those reading the manga know that Kenjaku has possessed Geto’s body and can use cursed spirit manipulation as well. And since the evolution process has turned Master Tengen into more of a cursed spirit, Kenjaku can use his technique to assimilate Tengen and evolve himself.
