- There are a total of 3 primary currencies in Marathon: Silk, Credits, and Lux.
- Credits are the earned currency in Marathon, and allow players to purchase weapons and consumables before runs.
- Lux is used for purchases in the in-game store and for buying the Rewards Pass, while Silk is used to unlock tiers in the Rewards Pass.
Marathon is finally here, with Bungie introducing players to a brand new universe filled with dangerous UESC enemies and other Runners trying scavenge Tau Ceti IV. As is the case with any extraction shooter, knowing how Marathon’s currencies and overall economy work is an essential part of the gameplay.
If you want to learn everything about the currencies that you can earn and spend in the game to make the most of Marathon Season 1, this guide is for you.
How Many Currencies Are There in Marathon?
Marathon features three currencies in a system that is designed to separate gameplay progression from cosmetic looks. The two primary currencies are Credits, Silk, and Lux. Credits are the functional “soft” currency, while Silk and Lux are the premium currencies used for high-end cosmetics and customizations.
What are Credits in Marathon?

Credits are the standard currency of the UESC in Marathon, serving as your reward for day-to-day raids and other operations. They are strictly an earned currency, which means you cannot buy them with real-world money. This currency is used for almost every functional interaction in the game’s hub, including purchasing weapons and utility items from the Armory.
How to Earn Credits Fast in Marathon
If you find your Credit wallet empty and unable to fund your next extraction, you need to optimize your loot runs. Here are some of the tips you can use to stack Credits quickly:
- Prioritize High-Value Loot: Every piece of scrap you find in Marathon isn’t created equally. You need to learn which technical components provide the most value-per-slot so you aren’t wasting inventory space by carrying junk around.
- Complete Faction Contracts: Faction contracts provide you with specific objectives that offer Credits in exchange for completion. Prioritizing these objects along with your main raid can help with earning massive amounts of Credits upon extracting successfully.
What is Lux in Marathon?

Lux is arguably the most important currency when it comes to cosmetics and seasonal progression in Marathon, as it allows players to purchase cosmetics like Marathon Runner Shell skins and weapon skins from the in-game store. You can also use Lux to unlock the Premium Track of each season’s Rewards Pass. This allows you to unlock exclusive skins, charms, and so much more.
Unlike Credits and Silk, which can be earned through in-game means, Lux can only be acquired through real-money purchases and cannot be earned for free.
What is Silk in Marathon?

Silk is the premium hard currency in Marathon. While Credits are important to keep your loadout up-to-date and fully stocked, Silk helps you ensure that you look clean while doing it. You can use Silk to unlock levels of the Marathon Rewards Pass.
Silk exists outside the gameplay loop to prevent pay-to-win mechanics, which means you can’t use Silk to purchase Marathon weapons that are more powerful than the ones you can purchase with Credits.
How to Earn Silk Fast in Marathon
The best way to earn Silk fast is through the Marathon Faction Contracts, which give you a vast array of tasks depending on the faction contract you have chosen. In addition to Silk, you can also get stat boosts from faction contracts. Apart from the Faction Contracts, you can also earn 10 Silk each time you level up in Marathon.
You can use the Silk you earn to unlock a plethora of cosmetics like custom Runner Shells and weapon skins through the Marathon Rewards Pass. However, it is important to remember that the game only allows you to have 200 Silk in your inventory at a time, so spend it as soon as you can.
