It’s finally happening. We are going back to where it all started with It – Welcome to Derry. Several fans think that the dark tale of Pennywise is finished within two movies, but they couldn’t be more wrong. There’s much more to Pennywise’s story than what meets the eye. And well, Welcome to Derry will take us back in time to show the events that led up to the events of IT Chapter 1. Ever since Welcome to Derry was announced, fans have been hoping to see the first trailer of the upcoming prequel. Well, after building enough anticipation around the project, Warner Bros. has finally released its first trailer.
IT – Welcome to Derry Gets First Official Trailer
Recently, Warner Bros. released the first official trailer of It – Welcome to Derry, and it is as dark as we expected it to be. The trailer also confirms that the series will premiere on HBO Max in fall 2025; however, the studio has yet to give us an exact release date.
Warner Bros. announced It—Welcome to Derry, based on Stephen King’s novel, back in 2022. The series is being developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs — the talented trio that was also involved in previous It film projects. While the series will introduce us to several fresh faces, Bill Skarsgård will reprise the role of Pennywise.
The trailer of Welcome to Derry picks up with a young couple picking up a lost boy from the middle of nowhere. Upon being asked where the boy wants to go, he replies, “Anywhere but Derry.” So, it seems like the boy knows that a demonic clown has been hunting children in Derry, and well, he wants to run as far as he can from the cursed town.
The trailer features a new set of characters and takes us back to 1962. This is a more conservative time, so the new African-American family that moved to Derry is having a hard time with other residents. However, it seems the children will grow closer to each other over a shared trauma. There are several people in the town who have been acting strangely, as if they have been possessed.
As expected, a number of children have gone missing, and while the Police department is beating around the wrong bushes, a group of children knows the truth. They have seen something that can’t be explained, and even if they dare to explain, no adult would believe them. The trailer for Welcome to Derry beautifully sets up the mystery around Derry. It gives us enough to spark that sense of thrill, but it doesn’t reveal too much to maintain the mystery around Pennywise.
Of course, the two It movies we’ve seen before this were fantastic, but they leave us wanting more. Interestingly, Welcome to Derry is an upcoming chapter set in the Pennywise universe that serves as a prequel to the first It film. The nine-episodic HBO Original series might answer more questions about Pennywise, while also raising some new ones, of course.
