Grand Theft Auto 6 is almost here, and while millions of players are counting down the days until they can explore Vice City, parents are contemplating whether to allow their kids to play it. With the sprawling open world, crime-focused plot, and mature themes, the game has attracted millions of young players and adults alike. So, should you let your child play GTA 6? Learn all about the GTA 6 parents’ guide here.
What is GTA 6 Story About?
GTA 6 is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar Games. It is set in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Miami, Florida, and one of the most popular GTA 6 locations that has generated the hype is Vice City, a lively setting filled with beaches, busy streets, nightlife, vehicles, and a colorful cast of characters.

The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, while GTA 6 pre-orders are live. For parents, one important note is that this game is not a general-purpose playground where kids of any age can hop in and drive cars all around.
Although the open world offers a range of side activities in GTA 6, the main criminal plot and mature content should be considered while deciding if it’s suitable for a younger audience.
What is the GTA 6 Age Rating?
The age rating is one of the most useful starting points in any GTA 6 parents’ guide. Rockstar’s official website displays the ESRB rating notice that warns the game may contain content inappropriate for children.
In the U.S. and Canada, the relevant ESRB rating for GTA 6 is Mature 17+ (M). This indicates that the game is intended for players aged 17 and older. Here are some important age ratings for major regions around the world:
Region Rating ESRB, United States and Canada M (17+) PEGI, Europe and participating nations PEGI 18 ACB, Australia R18+ GRAC, South Korea Adults Only (19+) CERO, Japan Pending IMDA, Singapore M18 (18+)
The above age restrictions are neither mere numbers nor a strong restriction that makes accessing or playing the game illegal. However, they are a strong reason to pause before allowing your child voluntary access to GTA 6.
GTA 6 Content Parents Should Know About
A responsible parent should look beyond the graphics and ask what the person playing the game will likely encounter during the experience. As you might have seen, the official GTA 6 trailers from Rockstar show a criminal setting, action sequences, nightlife, and adult imagery.
Violence and Criminal Activities
We cannot ignore the fact that violence is really a central part of the story. Jason and Lucia in GTA 6 are the two main protagonists, and they’re shown getting involved in criminal activity. Again, there’s a difference between watching violence in a film and participating in it through a game.
So, the best way for a parent to approach their kid about GTA 6 is first making a clear distinction between real and fictional violence.
Strong Language and Mature Humor
Another consideration is the language and satirical or strong humor that Rockstar has always used in their franchise. Certainly, families with young children don’t permit the use of strong or abusive language in their homes. If a child is to see and interact with this stuff, they’ll surely learn a thing or two.
Satire, offensive jokes, and adult references are a part of GTA’s fictional world. However, a certain context doesn’t automatically make the offensive jokes appropriate for every age group. So, a parent should have a calm conversation with their child and explain why it’s intended for older audiences.
Nudity and Sexual Content
Sexual content is a major consideration for parents, as the official promotional material and in GTA 6 Trailer 1 we saw adult nightlife scenes, while certain characters also wore revealing clothes.
However, a character’s outfit or a nightclub scene doesn’t necessarily prove that a particular sexual interaction or gameplay mechanic exists. Still, we can surely say that the game’s presentation is not aimed exclusively at children. So, an important question should occur to parents’ minds about how GTA 6’s adult-oriented presentation fits the family’s boundaries.
Drugs and Alcohol
GTA 6’s setting uses a nightlife and criminal underworld setting. Even in the GTA 6 Extended Look, we saw Jason and Lucia head inside a drug house to get a package for Boobie Ike.
So, a younger child may not have the experience needed to understand the context in which substance use is showcased. Have a clear conversation with your child, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a lecture.
So, the real question is: should parents let their children play Grand Theft Auto 6?
Parents, Should You Let Your Kids Play GTA 6?
GTA 6 is not a video game we recommend for children. Parents should be cautious before allowing their young kids and teenagers to play it.
However, a simple content warning or a recommendation available online, including this, doesn’t mean every family makes the same decision. A parent knows their children better than anyone else, and maturity varies from one person to another. But being mature for an age doesn’t mean the contents of GTA 6 change for them.
If you’re still in doubt, consider the following three broad age groups:
- Under 13: Not recommended. Children in this group should not be given access to GTA 6, whatever their maturity level is.
- Ages 13-16: Exercise Caution. This might seem like a confusing category because the excitement around GTA 6 can make teenagers feel left out when their friends are playing. However, peer pressure is never a good reason to ignore the age rating.
- Ages 17 and older: This age group aligns with the ESRB age rating, but it may still vary for certain regions. Nonetheless, being above 17 or 18 years of age is just the right time to allow your child to play the game.
For a younger audience under the age of 13, the answer is a clear no. A child who enjoys the house-building freedom of Minecraft or the social interaction of Roblox might be attracted to GTA 6, but the mature content is simply not suitable for them.
The conversation gets a bit complicated for teenagers aged 13-16. Online exposure can be one of the major reasons as to why they want to try out the game. Although having a deep conversation about why the game is intended for older people should be the ideal scenario, every situation might not be the same.
Parents can set up certain rules for their children who’re going to be adults in a few months. Since we all know how long a teenager abides by certain rules, it’s ideal to follow the age rating restriction.
How to Make an Informed Decision as a Parent
You don’t have to wait for the game to launch to make the decision of whether your child should play GTA 6. Rockstar has already published a ton of game content online as we speak. So, here are some points you should keep in mind:
- Review the online rating: Read the game’s official age ratings on Rockstar’s website rather than checking online rumors or word of mouth.
- Watch the official promotional videos first: GTA 6 trailers and the extended look on Netflix give you a direct look at the game. This will help you make the decision.
- Ask what interests your child: Have a meaningful conversation with your child and check what their interests lie in. Whether it’s driving cars around the cities or exploring the rich world with interactive NPCs. You can then suggest alternatives for the best adventure games or even other best games of all time.
- Explain your decision clearly: If you decide not to purchase GTA 6, explain the reason properly and answer every doubt they feel or make them feel heard due to the peer pressure.
- Use Parental Controls if necessary: If you have younger children at home, activating parental controls can help prevent accidental access to mature games.
That is everything parents should know before allowing their kids to play GTA 6. We’ve mentioned major scenarios that we feel make the game intended for adults. What is your opinion on the game now? Tell us in the comments section below.
