Google Camera App Mod Brings Night Sight to These Nokia Phones

The Pixel 3’s Night Sight feature, which has been tailor-made for low-light photography, is yet to become officially available. But we’ve already seen the feature deliver some stunning results, thanks to a Google Camera app mod on which the Night Sight feature has been enabled. It now appears that the Night Sight feature is also functional on the Nokia 6.1, 6.1 Plus, 7 Plus and the Nokia 8, thanks to the mod.

We have already tested the Google Camera app mod on the Nokia 7 Plus at Beebom and found that the Night Sight mode was working. We also installed the APK of the Google Camera app’s mod on the Nokia 6.1 Plus in our office and noticed that Night Sight feature worked fine on this device as well.

Here are a few low-light shots clicked using the Nokia 7 Plus on which the Google Camera mod with Night Sight enabled was installed.

If you want to try out the Night Sight feature on any of the four Nokia smartphones mentioned above, you can do so by following these steps:

  1. Download the Night Sight enabled Google Camera app form this page. If the first download link is not functional, try one of the mirror links.
  2. Alternatively, you can download the APK directly from this drive file.

However, it appears that the Google Camera mod’s Night Sight only works on devices which run either a stable or beta build of Android 9 Pie. We tried to run the app on the Nokia X6 unit at Beebom which runs Android 8.1 Oreo, but failed repeatedly, as the app simply failed to launch despite repeated attempts.

I tried it on Nokia 7 plus, which is updated to Pie
The app crashes every time I open it

Hey Mahesh, we tested the Google Camera app’s APK on the Nokia 7 Plus unit at Beebom which runs a beta build of Android Pie and can assert that the app does crash occasionally. However, you can disable the ‘Motion’ settings from the app’s home screen to solve the crash issue. If the app crashes instantly on opening it, you can try uninstalling it and then re-installing the APK to check if it works, or, you can download a stable build which you can find here. But in night sight mode in Nokia 6.1 Plus flash is automatically turned on in low light. No option to turn the flash off.

    • Nadeem Sarwar says:

Hey Aminul, it might be due to a bug. We tested the same Google Camera app APK on the Nokia 6.1 Plus at Beebom and can confirm that you can turn off the flash. Although we did notice that the app sometimes crashed when the flash settings were changed. However, the Night Mode works perfectly fine without illuminating the scene with the flash. The app stutters too, especially while using Night mode. We recommend that you turn off the flash as soon as you open the app and then enable the Night mode to click low-light photos. If the problem still persists, uninstall the app and then install it again. You can also try disabling the ‘Motion’ setting located at the top on the home screen to prevent the app crash. Hope that helps, and in case you have any further queries, feel free to ask. Thanks!

Will it work on mi a2 after it gets the pie update.
Any ideas abt the pie update on the device.

    • Nadeem Sarwar says:

Hey Niks, Xiaomi has released the rollout schedule of the Android Pie update for a number of smartphones such as the Redmi 5, 5A, Mi 8 Pro, etc. but the Mi A2 is missing from the list. As of now, it is not clear when the Mi A2 will receive the Android Pie update, but some reports say that the rollout will begin in Q4 2018. As far as downloading the Google camera app APK is considered, we recommend that you don’t download it unless a compatible build for Xiaomi devices is released. We’ll publish a post when a compatible version comes to our notice. Thanks!
