True to the rumors, the next installment in the God of War franchise has finally been announced at State of Play. Faye, aka Laufey, Kratos’ late wife, leads the new God of War game. God of War Laufey Release Date and Platforms
As God of War Laufey is currently in development, Santa Monica hasn’t yet disclosed the release date of the game. The team didn’t even share a release window at the recent State of Play event. However, it is speculated that God of War Faye will be released in mid or late 2028.

Santa Monica is moving away from Kratos for the first time, and they are exploring his wife’s story in the upcoming God of War Laufey. In case you forgot, the God of War 2018 game begins with the death of Faye. However, it is now revealed that death is not the end of the road for Faye. Following her funeral, Faye ascends to another realm and finds herself in a mysterious land called the Everywhen.
Soon, Faye learns that Kratos and Atreus’ lives are in danger, and she picks up the sword to fight against the gods in the afterlife. The Everywhen is a place overflowing with dangerous magic, as it is the endpoint where all magic returns. Ancient gods fight against each other for power and dominance in this realm. The game will be primarily “exploring the humanity, strengths, and flaws of the person whose legacy was beloved in the minds of many.”
God of War Laufey Gameplay
Santa Monica pulled off the unexpected and shared a 20+ minute gameplay footage of God of War Laufey at the recent State of Play event. The upcoming Laufey game will build upon the foundation established by previous God of War entries.
Similar to its predecessors, God of War Laufey will be a semi-open action-adventure game where you can explore the uncharted Everywhen realm and engage in brutal and fast-paced combat against the gods. Basically, the devs claim that the Laufey game will contain all the core elements that define a God of War game.
Faye is a formidable warrior from the Norse lands. So, she is capable of holding her ground against the powerful gods vying for power in this unknown land. In her afterlife, we will embark on a journey to protect her kin and seek the answer to the question: “What happens to the gods when they die? “
Since the Leviathan Axe is with Kratos now, Faye soon obtains a legendary sword from Rue after waking up in the Everywen. This will be Faye’s primary weapon choice while fighting the hostile gods in the magical realm. On the other hand, Faye also has the Golden Hand of the Jötnar as she is a giant.
This special hand gives Faye access to unbelievable magic. If Odin was afraid of this hand, then you must know how powerful it is. Based on the gameplay trailer, Faye seems to manipulate souls through her magic. We are excited to see more of her giant magic in the upcoming trailers.
Devs are elevating the combat pace in God of War Laufey. She is more agile than her husband and rapidly swings the sword to obliterate the enemies in her path. Thus, the fast-paced combat (focused on combos) will be brutal, similar to the previous GOW games.
