Ghost of Yotei Official Release Date

PlayStation officially announced Ghost of Yōtei, the spiritual sequel to the highly acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, at the State of Play showcase event with an announcement trailer. Later, Sony officially revealed a definitive release date for the sequel with a new trailer. It is now confirmed that Ghost of Yotei is all set to be released on October 2, 2025.
Fall 2025 is stacked with a lot of the most anticipated titles, such as Marathon, Borderlands 4, and GTA 6. We still have a long way to go, so in the meantime, you can find all the important details about the game in the sections below.
What Is the Story of Ghost of Yotei?
The latest Onryō’s List trailer revealed the details about Ghost of Yotei’s story, which fans have been waiting to hear about. Before this, we just knew that Atsu, the main character, was on a hunt for someone. As expected, GOY is about Atsu’s revenge quest, and the official description of the sequel is as follows:
Sixteen years ago in the heart of Ezo, a gang of outlaws known as the Yōtei Six took everything from Atsu. They killed her family and left her for dead, pinned to a burning ginkgo tree outside her home. But Atsu survived. She learned to fight, to kill, and to hunt, and after years away she has returned to her home with a list of six names: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito.
The creators further added that there is more to the story than just revenge, saying, “One by one, she’s hunting them down to avenge her family, armed with the same katana used to pin her to that burning tree all those years ago. But while Atsu’s story begins with vengeance, she’ll find there’s more to her journey than just revenge. As she explores Ezo, Atsu will meet unlikely allies and forge connections that help give her a new sense of purpose.”
Is There a Trailer For Ghost of Yotei?
After keeping the Ghost of Tsushima sequel project on the hush-hush for a long time, Sony unveiled it to the fans with a grandiose announcement trailer. Sucker Punch unveiled a second trailer during the release date announcement and you can watch the latest trailer of Ghost of Yotei here:
Ghost of Yotei Protagonist
Fans who were awaiting the comeback of our beloved Ghost, Jin Sakai, should put their expectations to rest as Sucker Punch has introduced a new female protagonist for their upcoming game. You will play Atsu, portrayed by Erika Ishii, another wandering ghost in the feudal lands of Japan.
Is Ghost of Yotei a Sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?
The answer to this is both a yes and a no. It sounds confusing, right? Let me explain! Ghost of Yotei isn’t a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Instead, it is a thematic continuation of the prequel and set in a different timeline and region as well. Therefore, you can consider Ghost of Yotei to be a primary spin-off set in the same GOT universe.
The story of Ghost of Yotei is confirmed to be set in 1603, three centuries later, following the first game’s events. As Atsu, you will be on your “underdog vengeance” journey around the lands of Ezo (Hokkaido in modern Japan), encompassing Mount Yotei. The devs have further given clues about this new setting as:
This area was outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.
Ghost of Yotei Gameplay
As Atsu, the Onryō (vengeful spirit), you will be traveling through the picturesque landscapes of Ezo in search of the six wicked villains who killed her family. As seen in the trailer, the gameplay of Ghost of Tsushima is revamped with fresh new mechanics, along with upgraded visuals. The latest additions in combat, such as the usage of distinct firearms, dual katanas, a pet wolf companion, and many more features, are awaiting us in the sequel.
In an interview with The New York Times, the developers at Sucker Punch studio remarked about how they have addressed a con regarding open-world games. In their words:
One challenge that comes with making an open-world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over again. We wanted to balance against that and find unique experiences.
You can pursue the six antagonists in any order you like, and there are new bounty quests to clash against unknown foes. Therefore, Ghost of Yotei is shaping up to be a much more exhilarating ride through Feudal Japan than its predecessor.
Ghost of Yotei is a PS5 exclusive title for now. Pre-orders for Ghost of Yotei will go live on the 2nd of May at 10:00 AM ET or 7:00 AM PT. The sequel comes in three different editions: standard ($70), digital deluxe ($79.99), and collectors’ edition ($249.99).
