Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Brings Back This Beloved Dark Souls 3 Feature

Let’s be honest, we are all loving Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree (review). The Elden Ring DLC has introduced multiple game-changing features to the base game. Whether it is the new weapon types, a huge number of spells, incantations, talismans, armors, or more. There’s so much on offer! But while playing the game, I realized that much finer secrets hide beneath the surface. I can honestly say that this little feature made me appreciate FromSoftware a lot more, and I thought I was already maxed out! Here’s what it was.

Stumbling on the Lamenter’s Mask

After playing the Elden Ring DLC for well over 70 hours, I finally stumbled upon a hidden area named Charo’s Hidden Grave. Although this place is absolutely breathtaking to look at, that’s not the secret I am talking about. At the outskirts of Charo’s Hidden Grave, I found a beast named the Lamenter.

After what seemed like a classic Elden Ring Erdtree fight, I defeated him and gained the Lamenter’s Mask. What seemed like a perfectly normal headpiece at first glance turned out to be much more than that.

Reading Item Descriptions Are Always Worth It

Being a Soulsborne veteran, it was a given for me to read the item description the first chance I got. And thank the gods that I did! A quick read revealed that it was not an armor piece, but a reusable item. What’s more important is that it could literally transform me into the Lamenter, which I defeated a couple of seconds ago.

As you would expect, curiosity overtook me. I followed the item’s instructions and disrobed, throwing aside my dignity, and used the Lamenter’s mask. And lo and behold, I was transformed into a pitch-perfect copy of the Lamenter.

While transformed as the Lamenter, I was unable to equip any other armor, but I could still equip the weapons and do everything else normally.

According to the Item Description, this transformation would only dissipate after the player’s death. However, something else caught my eye in the item description. It spoke about an effect when the Lamenter’s mask is used after being transformed into the Lamenter.

So I Used the Lamenter’s Mask, Again

When I used the Lamenter’s mask again after turning into the Lamenter, it made my head twice its size for a couple of seconds and I couldn’t help but burst out in laughter! I love games that add features like these which don’t have any technical value but are just there to have some fun.

Something like transforming into another creature was first, and last implemented by FromSoftware in Dark Souls 3 where players could transform into the Dragon form after putting together the Dragon statue.

While I was appreciating FromSoftware’s game-designing brilliance, I realized that there might be more items like this in the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. And so my search began, only to find that I was correct!

Transforming into the Ancient Dragon Was Way Cooler

Soon after finishing my Lamenter shenanigans, I came across a much cooler transformation, something much closer to the Dark Souls 3 dragon form. After going through an hour of despair fighting Bayle the Dread and defeating him, I reached out to the Ancient Dragon Priestess, who sent me out for the task in the first place, to only find her heart lying next to the Ancient Dragon Communion Alter.

Like the Lamenter’s mask, the Priestess Heart transformed me into an exact copy of the Dragon Priestess. However, unlike the Lamenter’s mask, the Ancient Dragon transformation also came with some benefits. Using this heart again after transforming into the Ancient Dragon would temporarily boost incantations of the capital’s ancient dragon cult.

How to Transform in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

Reading all this must have you excited and itching to do some transforming yourself. Transforming in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is quite simple. All you need is the transformation item and use it while being disrobed. After you are transformed, it cannot be undone except by death.

Some of the transformations have clear benefits, while others appear to be just for fashion. Want to know where to find all the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree transformations? Well, stay tuned because we have something on the way!
