- The trailer revealed a lot about the gameplay of Nightreign and what we can expect following its release in 2025.
Elden Ring Nightreign was revealed out of nowhere for dedicated FromSoftware fans, and it made me *actually* jump out of my chair during The Game Awards 2024. With Shadow of the Erdtree only releasing this year, and FromSoftware giving statements that they are not working on another Elden Ring game or DLC, the Elden Ring Nightreign trailer reveal completely blew our minds. The trailer was packed with information, and it is likely most of you missed out on many small details.
From the additions of multiple new bosses to the reappearance of many old faces, the trailer may hold a lot more than we think at first watch. Here are 5 things you likely missed in the Elden Ring Nightreign trailer.
1. It’s Not Just About Elden Ring
One of the biggest reveals about Elden Ring Nightreign is that it is not going to only be about Elden Ring, but likely the entire FromSoftware franchise. The very first thing we get to see is the Centipede demon from Dark Souls 1, followed by the Shrine Keeper and the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3.
It seems FromSoftware decided to put a full stop to all the modders bringing in old souls bosses in Elden Ring, by deciding to do it themselves. Other than that, we see quick and fluid movement with no fall damage, similar to Sekiro. It isn’t far-fetched to assume we will have bosses from all major FromSoftware games appearing here.
2. Was that Godwyn the Golden?
Although Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree received every praise it could from gamers, the biggest point of contention for the game was a missing boss that everyone wanted to fight. This boss is no other than Godwyn the Golden, whose soul was killed by Ranni the Witch, leaving his body alive.
Even though Elden Ring players never got to fight Godwyn in Elden Ring, there is a possibility that he might appear in Nightreign, especially as it clearly doesn’t follow the same lore. Why do I think so? Because we got a very brief look at a place that appeared to have Death Blight. This is not a clear indicator, but this is the biggest opportunity FromSoftware has to make it happen.
3. Finally, The Satisfying Co-Op We Asked For
Elden Ring Nightreign is confirmed to be a three-person co-op multiplayer game. The team of three will fight through different levels, and the game appears to have combo abilities. This might be the closest Dungeons and Dragons combat experiences we can have, as the repertoire of skills, weapons, and spells also appears to have been vastly increased in Nightreign.
To have the ability to finally play co-op in the world of Elden Ring without worrying about invasions or the arduous process of summoning in each area, even though we knew about its possibility, holds massive importance.
Also, there is going to be a downed mechanic in Elden Ring Nightreigns, allowing your allies to revive you when you do die.
4. It’s a Rogue-Like-Souls-Like, So Alike?
Elden Ring Nightreign is said to have a rogue-like gameplay where the players will have to pick between certain playable characters with pre-determined abilities and level them up as they quickly get through the levels in the game.
Keeping aside the rogue-soul-like puns, this format of gameplay perfectly works with the combat of Elden Ring, especially when the Nightreign combat has been further smoothened with added wall jumps and no fall damage. This brings the complete focus to slaying, which is the essence of all FromSoftware games and the basic identity of most rogue-likes.
5. Nightreign is Endless
One of the best parts about Elden Ring Nightreign is that it is endless, like the Chalice Dungeons of Bloodborne. The game is said to feature a randomly generated map each time you play through its levels, which also includes the enemies in that level.
Whether that also accounts for the bosses for each level is unknown, but there is always a possibility of that happening. Although I have had multiple playthroughs in Elden Ring, clocking close to 300 hours in the game, it does feel like a chore to start over each time.
Nightreigns would solve that problem for me so that I can truly focus on the one thing I love doing in FromSoftware games, getting myself rag-dolled by bosses twice my size. So, that’s everything we spotted in the Elden Ring Nightreign trailer today. Did I miss out on something? Let us know in the comments.
