Crimson Desert largely follows the story of Kliff Macduff, the sole protagonist of the game. However, the game also has a few more playable characters that you can switch to at specific moments. These characters serve a specific class and likely won’t be as customizable as Kliff Macduff himself, who is considered a jack of all trades. So, find out all the playable Crimson Desert characters from our guide here.
Every Playable Character in Crimson Desert at Launch
Although Crimson Desert doesn’t support co-op, the band of mercenaries you build can give a similar feeling. There are currently three playable characters confirmed for Crimson Desert. Although Kliff Macduff is the sole protagonist, you can also switch to other characters at some point of time in the game for a brief period. Here are all playable characters in Crimson Desert:
- Kliff Macduff
- Damiane
- Oongka (The Brute)
Other than these three, the official media also showcases two other characters, but we have no information about them yet. Now, let’s take a closer look at each of these three characters and understand their abilities and lore in Crimson Desert.
Kliff Macduff

Kliff Macduff is the protagonist of Crimson Desert and is the one you will play for the majority of the game’s content. He is a versatile character, giving players full control over how they mold his abilities. You get complete freedom on what weapons, spells, or skills you want to use on Kliff Macduff. Initially, he does have a sword, a shield, and a bow, which are the three main weapon types in the game. But we have also seen him use polearms and two-handed weapons, so the game won’t strictly limit you to the three weapon types.
When it comes to lore, Kliff Macduff is a mercenary who is trying to fill the power void left behind by the King of Demeniss. The Unifier of Lands has fallen into a coma, and it is Kliff and his band of mercenaries’ job to fix it and bring stability to the lands.
Damiane

Damiane is another confirmed Crimson Desert character who will be playable in the game. She is expected to be a glass cannon, as she can deal insane damage with her rapier and pistol and has high agility, allowing her to dodge attacks easily. She, however, has low HP and banks on her high agility to avoid enemy attacks instead of tanking hits. When Damiane becomes playable is still unknown, but she should be an ideal pick for all players who prefer a rogue-style glass canon gameplay.
Oongka (The Brute)

Oongka (The Brute) is a strong orc with high damage and defensive ability. He lacks agility, but more than makes up for it with his devastating hits from massive weapons. Oongka focuses on AoE damage, and can easily take out large groups of enemies alone with his two-handed axe. Any gamer who prefers a strong build will prefer using Oongka over Daminae in Crimson Desert.
Can You Create Your Own Character in Crimson Desert?
No, you cannot create your own character in Crimson Desert, as it is a single-player RPG that focuses on Kliff Macduff as the main protagonist of the game. The game doesn’t allow you to make a character from scratch, like Skyrim or Dragon’s Dogma 2. However, Kliff Macduff is a ‘play as you want’ character, giving complete freedom to players on which abilities, weapons, or spells they want him equipped with.

But don’t be upset, as Crimson Desert does let you change character appearances at camps, specifically using Barber Shops and Dyehouses for Kliff and other playable characters. Since it already has outfits that will be granted with Crimson Desert pre-order bonuses and you can purchase later, you can also change your character’s hairstyle and hair color at any given time while navigating the open world
