The long-awaited ‘Blackout 2’ battle royale experience is finally coming to Call of Duty: Warzone. Officially named Black Ops Royale, Treyarch’s new game mode is crafted in the spirit of the Black Ops 4 fan-favorite, except with modern touches and a new playground to spice things up. True to their word, Black Ops Royale brings significant changes to the Call of Duty BR formula, some of which are likely to catch fans off guard.
With the game mode all set to be released soon, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide on Black Ops Royale, including the game mode’s release date, gameplay features, and more.
Call of Duty Black Ops Royale Release Date
Call of Duty Black Ops Royale will be released on March 12 at 9 AM PT for the US West Coast, and March 13 at 12 AM ET for the US East Coast. The game mode is completely free-to-play; just update your Call of Duty client on any platform and jump in when the experience goes live.
Warzone Blackout 2 was announced all the way back in October 2025 during the Call of Duty Next event. Its open-world map, Avalon, was made available in Black Ops 7 shortly after. But now, players can look forward to seeing the full experience soon.
What is Call of Duty Black Ops Royale?

Black Ops Royale is a brand-new battle royale experience that takes inspiration from Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode. It features no loadouts, no buy stations, no respawning via the Gulag, and instead, players will wingsuit into Avalon, scavenge and upgrade ground loot, complete new activities, and be the last squad standing to secure the win. There is a shrinking circle, of course, but here you’ll be restricted by an electrical field, as opposed to a cloud of toxic gas.
A total of 25 squads, or 100 players, will join a single lobby. Immediately after landing, your goal will be to secure weapons and chase activities to get high-tier gear. There’s no ‘cash’ currency in this mode, so your primary matter of concern will be your gear right from the jump. There’s an Archetype system baked into every weapon build, which denotes the combat scenario that gun is best-suited for.
Additionally, armor vests now follow a tier system. There are three total tiers of armor that can be picked up as loot, and you don’t need to follow a linear upgrade path to instantly get the highest armor tier.
The last important change to touch upon is the Perk system. In Black Ops Royale, Perks can be picked up as ground loot, in supply boxes, or as rewards. All Perks will only last for a limited-time, and you’ll choose when to trigger them. You can keep up to five Perks in your inventory and can swap them with your teammates.
And that covers the core gameplay loop of Black Ops Royale. Below, we’ve delved into individual features and elements that are important to know.
Black Ops Royale Gameplay Features: Blackout 2 Explained
Here is every new gameplay feature or change you can expect to see in Black Ops Royale:
- Weapon Upgrades and Archetypes
- New Perk System
- Blackout-Style Equipment
- Redeploy Tokens
- Avalon Activities
- Cradle Beach Zones
Weapon Upgrades and Archetypes

With loadouts being removed, all players start Black Ops Royale matches with the standard pistol. This means that you’ll be scavenging for more guns immediately after dropping, although you’ll predominantly find Common (Grey) tier weapons. Weapons scale in tier depending on the number of attachments they have:
- Common (Grey): One Attachment.
- Uncommon (Green): Two Attachments.
- Rare (Blue): Three Attachments.
- Epic (Purple): Four Attachments.
- Legendary (Orange): Five Attachments (maximum for normally secured weapons).
To upgrade weapons, you’ll need to find Attachment Kits on the map. These can be used to upgrade any weapon, but the new attachments are pre-determined, and you won’t be able to pick them on the fly. Naturally, the end goal is to secure Legendary-tier weapons, which are complemented by five attachments. It’s also worth noting that Avalon will only contain Black Ops 7 weapons, meaning guns from BO6 or MW3 will not be available.
The upgrade system goes hand-in-hand with Archetypes. The five predetermined attachments that you can fix onto a looted weapon have been bench-tested and designed to perform in a particular way: Every armament is designated for a particular style of play, and the grouping of attachments matches that style of play. This is known as the Weapon Build Archetype.
The game mode features a total of 40 Archetypes, with every weapon class having its own options. The system certainly sounds a bit too busy on paper, so it’ll be interesting to see how streamlined it feels in-game.
New Perk System

As mentioned earlier, Perks are now lootable items that can be used tactically by players. Each Perk lasts for a limited amount of time and can also be swapped with teammates. Here’s every Perk coming to Black Ops Royale:
- Awareness: Increases the volume of enemy footsteps by a modest amount. You also gain the ability to track enemy footprints.
- Brawler: Gain a small amount of additional health when engaged in melee attacks. Provides bonus to your health if you are fully healed. Strong increase in melee damage. Adds the Tactical Sprint ability.
- Engineer: Allows you to see enemy equipment, killstreaks, and vehicles through walls. When you’re a driver or a passenger in a vehicle, it will repair itself over time.
- Iron Lungs: Increases the time you can hold your breath while underwater or using certain Optic Scopes. Reduces weapon flinch and idle sway.
- Looter: Supply boxes within a reasonable proximity are outlined. A modest increase in the chance to find higher-value loot (more special items).
- Medic: Downed allies return to the fray with impressive bonus health. You can insert Armor Plates more rapidly. You can revive yourself and others more quickly.
- Mobility: No fall damage. You swap weapons more rapidly and reload more quickly.
- Outlander: Reduces the damage you take if caught in a Circle Collapse and increases the movement speed if inside a Circle Collapse, both by a modest amount.
- Paranoia: You can sense when an enemy is looking at you.
- Reinforced: Explosive and fire-based damage is reduced by a sizable amount and cannot down you if you’re struck while at full health. You gain resistance to Flashbangs and Stuns, and suffer reduced damage from the Hand Cannon, War Machine, and Death Machine.
- Skulker: Increases your movement speed by a minor amount. Increases your crouch and prone speed by a modest amount. Increases your swimming speed by an impressive amount.
- Squad Link: When you ADS, enemies are automatically pinged. Shooting enemies outlines them briefly. Downed enemies within your general vicinity will be visible through obstacles.
Blackout-Style Equipment
The original Blackout was famous for having different types of equipment, and Black Ops Royale sees the return of some key items. Below, you’ll find all Tactical Gear in the game mode:
- EMP Grenade: Disables or destroys electronics. Effective against Equipment, Killstreaks, and enemy players.
- Flashbang: Blinds and deafens targets temporarily.
- Grappling Hook: See below. Uncommon loot.
- Psych Grenade: Explodes on impact, releasing a lingering cloud of hallucinogenic gas.
- Sensor Dart: See below.
- Smoke Grenade: Deploys a smoke screen that blocks vision and automated targeting systems.
- Stim Shot: Military stimulant that quickly heals combat wounds.
- Stun Grenade: Slows the victim’s movement and aiming.
And now, here’s all the Lethal Gear in Blackout 2:
- Cluster Grenade: Device that scatters smaller explosives when detonated. Uncommon loot.
- Combat Axe: Thrown axe that can kill enemies in one hit. Bounces off surfaces. Uncommon loot.
- Cymbal Monkey: Device that causes a distracting sound that can lure nearby zombies. It explodes after a short countdown, inflicting damage in the immediate vicinity. Rare loot within Cradle Breaches.
- Frag Grenade: Cookable fragmentation grenade.
- Needle Drone: Small flying drone that explodes on impact. Toggles between auto or manual control.
- Point Turret: Small deployable sentry turret that automatically shoots at enemies, distracting and damaging them.
- Sticky Grenade: Timed sticky grenade.
Redeploy Tokens

With both the Gulag and Buy Stations removed, you might be wondering how respawns work in Black Ops Royale. Well, there are two main ways to respawn in the game mode, including Redeploy Tokens and Redeployment Towers.
You’ll begin a match with a single Redeploy Token and find more available as loot, though your capacity to carry these items is limited to one. If you’re eliminated, you automatically expend a token, and there’s a short delay timer before you’re able to drop in. After dropping in, you’ll need to look for a fresh token to keep the cycle going.
The second way to redeploy in Black Ops Royale is through Redeployment Towers. These locations are tied to Avalon Activities, and you’ll have to capture them first or fend off the current occupants to bring back your fallen teammates.
Avalon Activities

You can think of these Activities as Warzone contracts, except they pack a bit more variety and require more coordination among squadmates. Some of them even have PvE elements to contend with, but all the effort will be worth the high-tier loot you’ll get in return. Here’s every Activity in Black Ops Royale:
- Target Uplink Station: A tactical station where squads can search for player bounties. Hunt down the target within three minutes to earn your reward.
- Surprise Shipment: Secure a reward from a Guild shipment container guarded by robotic enemies.
- Surveillance Drone: Expect to occasionally run into Guild Drones patrolling a specific area of Avalon. Destroy the Drone and its support units, and grab some loot from the wreckage.
- Strongbox Crack: Obtain safecracking software and hack a Guild safe anywhere on the map to get high-level loot.
- Relay Antenna: Activate Guild hardware to scan for hostiles and launch a Redeploy Drone.
- Redeploy Tower: Revive previously slain squad mates by locating the tower and surviving a countdown to capture the tower.
- Supply Drops: Care packages dropped across Avalon, containing potent loot when captured.
Cradle Breach Zones

Just like the original Blackout, there are areas of Avalon that are much more dangerous to explore in Black Ops Royale. These self-contained, contaminated zones distort perception, unleashing wild hallucination, including zombie incursions. These fissures in your squad’s reality are known as Cradle Breaches. Black Ops 7 Endgame players will be no strangers to these areas, and here are the Activities they’ll contain:
- Mangler: In this Activity, an enemy Mangler appears to patrol the zone, with toughened armor and dangerous firepower. The squad that eliminates the Mangler (or a rival team that swoops in to claim the dropped rewards from the Mangler’s corpse) can grab some particularly high-tier loot.
- Mystery Box: In this Activity, you should check the vicinity for a crackling beam of electrical light emanating skywards from an old wooden crate. Known as a Mystery Box, this loot chest is locked and requires you to slay zombies in the vicinity before it opens.
