Ser Steffon Was the Lord Commander of Queensguard
Today’s episode started with Queen Rhaenyra desperately searching for new Dragonriders for three dragons without a master on their side. As a result, she decided to go with her son’s idea of seeking dragon riders outside of Targaryen’s blood. Among them is Ser Steffon, who hails from House Darklyn. Lord Gunthor Darklyn of Duskendale is the father of Steffon, who was executed earlier by Criston Cole in episode 4.
Ser Steffon took an oath to serve as Jaehaerys I’s Kingsguard and then used to serve Viserys Targaryen as a part of his Kingsguard. Finally, he became the Lord Commander of his daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Queensguard. Rhaenyra acknowledged Steffon’s origin and remarked he is of noble birth. In the history books, it is mentioned that the Darklyns and Targaryens shared ancestry (similar to the Velaryons).
Ser Steffon Darklyn’s Origin and Death
Rhaenyra also mentioned Steffon’s lineage, mentioning in particular that his grandmother’s grandmother was Aeriana, a Targaryen princess. Thus, as he had a little Targaryen blood in him, Rhaenyra wanted to see if her loyal knight could become a new dragon rider. Steffon also knew the risk and he proved his loyalty to his queen by going forth with this plan to conquer the Seasmoke dragon.
However, this venture resulted in Ser Steffon getting burned to a crisp by Seasmoke eventually. His father was murdered earlier, and now his death in the series makes it even sadder. The role of Ser Steffon Darklyn was played by the British actor Anthony Flanagan (known for Life on Mars, Prisoner’s Wife, etc).
