First Look at the Trial Chambers in Minecraft Snapshot 23W45A

Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for is here. The latest snapshot 23W45A has just been released and by enabling the Minecraft 1.21 update experiments we can experience the new exciting structure – trial chambers for the first time. So, let’s not waste any more time and dive in!

Trial Chambers Generation Revealed

Trial chambers generate only in the Overworld dimension. Moreover, you will mostly find them while exploring the deepslate layers. But occasionally, some parts may even occur in the stone layers. So, unlike the ancient cities, trial chambers don’t generate too low in the world.

The structure of the trial chambers varies greatly. You’ll find both small and huge chambers. Furthermore, the rooms in these buildings are procedurally generated, which means there cannot be two identical trial chambers. Next, you’ll find corridors, tunnels, cramped rooms, and wide-open large rooms. This structure is mainly composed of various tuff and copper blocks.

There are even flower pots, flower pots with dead bushes, and candles scattered around as decoration. Staircases and ladders link the floors together. Though, just like in the strongholds, the passageways may lead to dead ends.

Trial Chambers Dangers

Since trial chambers are pretty well-lit, thanks to the new copper bulbs being everywhere, natural hostile mob spawns are uncommon. But, considering this structure was made with a combat challenge in mind, expect it to be quite difficult. The main dangers come in the form of trial spawners. They are special mob spawners that adapt to the number of players nearby and summon an adequate number of mobs. Every trial chamber includes three categories of mobs:

• Melee (Zombie, Husk, Slime)
• Small Melee (Spider, Cave Spider, Baby Zombie, Silverfish)
• Ranged (Skeleton, Stray, Skeleton with Poison Tipped Arrows)

In addition, every chamber only spawns the same mob from each of the categories. These special spawners give players a hint for the type of mobs that will spawn indicated by the blocks around it. According to our testing, if you’re playing solo, you will usually face 3 mobs at a time. After you defeat them, the spawner will go into a cooldown state that lasts for 30 minutes.

One type of trial spawner also spawns a brand new mob — Breeze. It’s a wind-controlling mob with special ranged attacks that can knock back players and interact with certain blocks.

Finally, you will also come across traps in the form of dispensers filled with arrows, fire charges, snowballs, or water buckets. But you may also use them against the hostile mobs.

Loot in the Trial Chambers in Snapshot 23W45A

Loot is obtainable in several different ways in the trial chambers. You’ll find supply chests and barrels containing items and blocks that will help you navigate the structure. Those can include torches, wooden blocks, food, and more. Reward chests provide you with more valuable loot like enchanted iron armor, weapons and tools, enchanted books, precious materials, etc. Though, keep in mind that they’re guarded by the trial spawner mobs.

Besides those, you can break decorated pots placed around to obtain some precious materials, like amethyst shards, lapis lazuli, emeralds, iron ingots, copper ingots, and even a new item – Trial Key. A special new item that currently has no uses. Also, after completing the trial spawner’s challenge, it will award you with precious materials as well, proportional to the number of players that joined the battle.

Since the development is still in progress, all the mentioned features can change until the final official release. With that said, that’s pretty much it.
