Following the heartbreaking second episode of The Last of Us Season 2, the new episode opened up with the aftermath of Joel’s death. We get to see Tommy bidding a final goodbye to his brother and a traumatized Ellie waking up in the hospital. Three months pass, and Ellie is all set to avenge Joel’s death, so she leaves for Seattle with Dina in search of Abby and her group. While the majority of the episode focused on Ellie as she embarks on a vengeful journey, it also introduces TV show fans to a new faction called the Seraphites or Scars.
Who Are the Scars in The Last of Us Season 2?

Seraphites, also known as Scars, is a religious cult group that came into existence several years after the outbreak. It was formed by a mysterious, unnamed woman who rejected modernity as she believed that humanity’s reliance on technology was the reason for the destruction of civilization.
The woman was called ‘Prophet’ by the members of the cult. Even though we have limited details about her, the journals state that she was a fearless woman who fought the Infected zombies when the Cordyceps infection started spreading. Following her death, the Seraphites devoted themselves entirely to the religious cult and carved their faces with visible marks that defined them as Scars.
Unlike the other groups in the series, Seraphites don’t use modern weapons. Instead, they can be seen using hammers, bows, and arrows to attack their enemies. Their attacks are also stealth-based. What distinguishes them from other cults in The Last of Us is their style of communication.
During battles, the Seraphites use whistles to communicate and alert each other. They believe in ritualistic sacrifices and reject anything that connects them to technology. For instance, they don’t use electricity as that goes against the will of their Prophet.
What Is the Significance of Seraphites in The Last of Us?
After Abby kills Joel, Ellie is determined to take revenge on her, so she heads to Seattle. However, she has no clue that WLF isn’t the only organization she has to deal with; in fact, she comes across Seraphites at multiple points.
Seraphites have always been enemies of the WLF, and even Abby has killed several Seraphites wth her own hands. However, there comes a time when Abby comes across some Seraphites who aren’t as evil as she always thought.
This becomes the turning point in Abby’s life and the story of The Last of Us, as Abby betrays her own people to save these Seraphites. On top of that, she even kills some of her former allies to save those she once called the “enemy.” At that moment, Abby sort of realizes why Joel did what he did back then in the Hospital. Abby killed her own allies to save an innocent Seraphite child. Similarly, Joel killed Fireflies to save Ellie, another innocent child. Seraphites may have been a blood-thirsty group in the story, but eventually, they become a medium of redemption for Abby.
