Phantom Blade Zero Difficulty Modes Explained

In Short
  • Phantom Blade Zero has four difficulty modes — Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker, and 66 Days.
  • Wayfarer is the easiest difficulty mode, while 66 Days is the hardest.
  • Pathbreaker is the standard experience that the developers want first time players to have in the game.

Phantom Blade Zero is an action RPG, and it is decently challenging. Although the game is not really a soulslike, it shares many core aspects of that genre. However, one aspect it doesn’t share is difficulty settings. Phantom Blade Zero has multiple difficulty settings, unlike one common system seen in soulslikes. So, here are all Phantom Blade Zero difficulty modes explained, so that you know which difficulty is best for your style.

Phantom Blade Zero has four difficulty modes, each providing a different range of challenge. Here are all the Phantom Blade Zero difficulty modes:

  • Wayfarer: This is the least difficult setting in the game and has less aggressive and reactive enemies, with easier stance breaks and more executions. This is for those who want to simply experience the story and enjoy the combat without too much pushback.
  • Pathbreaker: This is the standard difficulty of the game, giving the proper experience developers decided for the players. Anyone who is trying out the game for the first time and is experienced with action RPGs should choose this difficulty.
  • Hellwalker: This difficulty becomes available after unlocking the Phantom Blade Zero New Game+. It adds more boss skills and attack patterns to increase the challenge.
  • 66 Days: This is the hardcore difficulty for players who have become veterans of the game’s combat. The game limits you to 66 deaths, while the difficulty remains in the Hellwalker tier. Dying more than 66 times will end the game.

However, the difficulty setting won’t matter if your device cannot run the game. Check the Phantom Blade Zero system requirements to know whether the game can run on your PC or not.

How Hard is Phantom Blade Zero?

Phantom Blade Zero is a fairly difficult game, but its range of difficulty options makes it more accessible for casual players. The game not only offers a lighter difficulty option, but it also provides a ton of in-game abilities that can easily help you defeat bosses.

However, while being easier than other soulslike games due to the different difficulty options, the game also provides a more hardcore experience for players looking for a challenge. The best part about Phantom Blade Zero’s increased difficulty modes is that it doesn’t simply add more HP and defences to enemies.

Instead, bosses get more skills and attack patterns, while also having a new AI that changes attack patterns based on their attacks missed on players. This genuinely creates a much different combat experience from the lower-tier difficulty settings in the game.
