For a long time, we thought that the One Piece world was governed by a World Government at the top, similar to the ones we have in the real world. But author Eiichiro Oda dropped a bombshell revelation that there has been a secret ruler, Imu, ruling from the shadows all this time, several hundred chapters later. There had to be a ruler before the formation of the World Government, and many believed Joy Boy to be the previous king. However, Oda has once again surprised the fans with a twist involving Davy D. Jones.

Davy D. Jones Was the Previous King of the One Piece World
The new chapter picks up from when Rocks D. Xebec was Domi Reversi’d by Imu. Though it seemed as if Rocks lost control in the previous chapter, it was surprising to see Rocks resisting Imu’s broken ability. In his last moments before being turned into a mindless puppet monster for Imu, Rocks revealed a shocking truth that enraged the supreme monarch quickly. Rocks remarked that Davy D. Jones was the former king of the world before Imu assumed that position.
This essentially means that Davy D. Jones was the ruler of the Great Kingdom, which was erased from not just the history books but also from the world. Since the Davy clan descended from this monarch, the Davy family must have been a royal family before they had to escape from their fateful end.
We know that the Great Kingdom was the enemy nation of the Twenty Kingdoms, which formed the World Government we know today, as revealed by Professor Clover. In addition, Imu losing their temper in an instant upon hearing his name tells us the story itself. Imu allied with the rest of the kingdoms to overthrow Davy D. Jones from his throne.
Currently, we don’t know why Imu did that. Is it because of their ambition to become the ruler themself? Imu straight-up denied that Davy was a king before them. So, we can’t wait to find the real conflict between the two sovereigns in the Void Century flashback, which will be unraveled soon in the story.
