Modern Family Cast: Where Are They Now?

Modern Family is one of the most entertaining sitcoms to ever come out. Releasing in 2009 and spanning a decade with over 250 episodes, Modern Family has found its audience in Gen Z and millennials alike. The cast of Modern Family gave their career-best performances to make the TV show a hit. If you are wondering what the actors playing Phil or Luke Dunphy are doing now that the show is over, we are here to answer it. Here is what the Modern Family cast is doing now. We have also added the then and now photos of the Modern Family cast members, and some of them are unrecognizable.

1. Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy

Ty Burrell appears in Modern Family as Phil Dunphy, who became the definition of the term “Cool Dad”. Before joining the cast of the evergreen sitcom, Burrell was rejected for the role four times by ABC, and even after his loved ones advised him not to try once more, Burrell did it anyways and cracked the role and bagged two Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Phil Dunphy.

Before appearing in Modern Family, Ty had been appearing in minor roles in blockbuster movies like Dawn of the Dead, National Treasure: Book of Treasures, and The Incredible Hulk. he had also appeared in short sitcoms like Back to You and Out of Practice.

After Modern Family concluded, Ty bagged some major roles but later took a break from acting to spend more time with his wife and two daughters. As of now, he says that he is open to act in shows that hit close to home like Modern Family did. Ty has also voiced Jack Harris in the animated show Duncanville and Bailey in Finding Dory.

2. Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy

If micro-management were a person, it would be Claire Dunphy, played by Julie Bowen. Initially, when Julie was offered the role of Claire Dunphy, she rejected the role, saying she couldn’t do comedy. However, when persuaded by her managers, she finally took up the role and went on to win two Emmy Awards. Before appearing in the Modern Family cast, Julie Bowen was best known for appearing in Happy Gilmore (1996) as Adam Sandler’s love interest.

After Modern Family’s conclusion, Julie Bowen once again worked with Adam Sandler in Hubie Halloween (2020) and also starred in the horror-comedy Totally Killer (2023). Her most recent appearance is in Peacock’s Hysteria! (2024), where she took up the role of Linda Campbell.

Just like in Modern Family, Julie is a mother to three children and is currently an active board member for a charity called Baby2Baby, which supports children in need.

3. Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy

Sarah Hyland appears as Haley Dunphy in Modern Family and, in my opinion, has one of the best character arcs in the show. Before appearing on Modern Family, Sarah had appeared as Howard Stern’s daughter, Ashley, in Private Parts (1997), which was also her first gig as an actress. She then appeared on screen in 2000 as young Audrey Hepburn in The Audrey Hepburn Story. Sarah Hyland also starred in The Vampire Academy (2014).

After saying goodbye to Modern Family, Sarah appeared on Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin (2022), along with her co-star from Modern Family, Adam DeVine, who appeared as Andy in the sitcom. In 2022, Sarah Hyland got married to Wells Adams, with her wedding officiated by none other than Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell, Sarah’s on-screen uncle in Modern Family. Hyland was also given the Courage Award by none other than Julie Bowen, her on-screen mom, for being a domestic abuse survivor.

4. Ariel Winter as Alex Dunphy

Ariel Winter took up the role of Alex Dunphy, the smart kid in the Dunphy family, who shares an amazing dynamic with her polar opposite sister, Haley. Ariel has been in the industry since she was 4 years old, after her mother signed her up for advertisements. Even while she was working on Modern Family, she used to do voice acting gigs on the side and has given her voice to popular shows like Phineas and Ferb, Star Trek: The Lower Decks, and Elena of Avalor.

As of now, she has taken a break from acting and has moved away from Los Angeles to stay away from the paparazzi. She has also stepped into content creation on Instagram and posts cooking videos on her page quite frequently.

5. Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy

Nolan Gould appeared as Luke in the cast of Modern Family and the youngest child of Phil and Claire. Luke is known for his endless energy and, arguably, the lowest IQ in the entire family. However, in real life, Nolan Gould is no less than a genius. Nolan is a member of Mensa International, a society for high IQ people, and graduated high school at the age of 13. After Modern Family, Gould appeared on screen in some roles.

He appeared on R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour (2011) and Friends With Benefits (2011) and also appeared in reality shows like Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition (2018) and The Celebrity Dating Game (2021). He also starred in comedies like The Nana Project (2023) and Camp (2023) and made a guest appearance in Grey’s Anatomy (2022). As you can see in the photo above, Luke Dunphy has become unrecognizable and turned into a well built man.

He is one of those characters who always has a lot going on for himself and has the most entertaining crashouts in the series. Jesse’s appearance as Mitchell in Modern Family earned him five Emmy nominations.
