Minecraft 2? Creator Notch Teases a Spiritual Successor

In Short
  • The original creator of Minecraft Notch started a poll on X after expressing interest in making a spiritual successor to Minecraft.
  • Over 75% of the community voted yes to a Minecraft 2, making the option win the poll.
  • While there's no official announcement due to legalities with Microsoft, we could potentially see a Minecraft 2 if Notch works with Mojang once again.

It seems everyone around the world loves Minecraft like nothing else. Besides being massively played by about 200 million players and a full Minecraft movie, it now seems that we might be getting a sequel. Well, kind of. The original creator of Minecraft Notch took to X to announce his plans for a spiritual successor to Minecraft.

In a post that went up a few days ago, Notch informed the community that he’s currently working on a new game, which is equal parts mix of traditional roguelike mixed with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler. However, he then proceeded to express that people might be more interested in him making a spiritual successor thing to Minecraft and started a poll for the same.

And what do you know? The X post Notch started currently stands at over 75% of almost 180K votes saying yes for Minecraft 2. If Notch actually follows through, we could very well see a spiritual successor to Minecraft.

Can Notch Make Minecraft 2?

Technically speaking, he unfortunately cannot make Minecraft 2 without Microsoft’s involvement. For those unaware, Markus Persson, also known as Notch, is the original creator behind Minecraft and Mojang Studios. When the game catapulted to fame, he sold Mojang to Microsoft for a whopping 2.5 billion in 2014.

Responding to a question about whether he could actually make Minecraft 2, he said he couldn’t because Microsoft owns the game’s IP. Nonetheless, the new game would have a different title and setting but similar mechanics to Minecraft.

Furthermore, Notch even expressed interest in working with Microsoft again if he was offered the opportunity. He even offered to “give them a much bigger share,” and then he would be obliged to prove his sincerity.

As you can guess, there’s obviously no concrete announcement about Minecraft 2, nor is there any media for it. However, we are eagerly keeping an eye on Notch’s X account in hopes of any announcement about a new game.
