To comply with EU’s GDPR regulations, Instagram had announced that it’ll roll out a data download tool for its users. Now it has gone live well ahead of the May 25 deadline and is now rolling out to users.
The data download tool is only accessible on the web right now (follow this link) and will make an appearance under the privacy setting tab on the Android and iOS app in the coming days.
It’s quite simple to use, and should be a familiar process if you have downloaded your Facebook data. It only requires you to enter your email address and password; Instagram will send a copy of “photos, comments, profile info, messages, and more” to your inbox.
Instagram says that it can take up to 48 hours to collect your data and send it by email. This is the first time Instagram has made such a privacy-centric tool available to its user base, and it is largely because of the impending GDPR deadline. Even so it is good to see the company taking some serious measures to improve privacy.
