- Mega Gyarados has a high base attack with a dual typing of Water and Dark.
- You can catch a Magikarp and evolve it into a Gyarados at level 20.
- Gyarados can be Mega Evolved using the Gyaradosite Mega Stone.
Rogue Mega Evolution is storming in Pokemon Legends ZA, and to counter them, you must Mega Evolve your Pokemon too. You can get a lot of strong companions in the early stages, and Mega Gyarados is one of them. Gyarados is undoubtedly one of the strongest Pokemon in Legends ZA, due to a lot of factors, and with Mega Evolution, it gets even better.
Obtaining a Gyarados is fairly easy, but Mega Evolving one can be somewhat challenging. But fret not, as we share the best method for getting a Mega Gyarados right here.
How to Obtain Mega Gyarados in Pokemon Legends ZA
The best way to obtain a Mega Gyarados is by catching a Magikarp and evolving it into a Gyarados. After that, make it hold a Gyaradosite Mega Stone to Mega Evolve.
1. Catching a Magikarp
Magikarp is one of the easiest Pokemon to catch in Legends ZA. They can be found swimming in almost every water body. You can just throw a Poke Ball at it, or weaken it in a battle and then catch it.
You can catch a Magikarp at Wild Zone 2 and Wild Zone 6. Wild Zone 2 has a lot of them inside the pool. However, there is a guaranteed level 30 Alpha Magikarp that appears during the day. We recommend catching that one, as the stats will be much better than the normal ones. Wild Zone 6 also has two Magikarps and can be found inside the canal. If you are lucky, then you might find an Alpha or a shiny.
2. Evolving into a Gyarados
Once you have a Magikarp of your choice, it can be evolved into a Gyarados at level 20. You can follow these steps to evolve a Magikarp:
- Click the X button on your Nintendo Switch to open the Menu.
- Select Boxes.
- Select your Magikarp in the Box, and move it to your active team.
- Click B to go back.
- A yellow upward arrow will show, meaning it can be evolved.
- Select the Magikarp and click Evolve.
Now you will have your very first Gyarados. You can also catch one from the Wild Zone 11, but that will take some time to unlock.
3. Mega Evolving your Gyarados
Your next step will be getting a Gyaradosite for your Gyarados. You can get that from Quasartico Inc. by exchanging 240 Mega Shards.
Quasartico Inc. is unlocked during the Main Mission 10 – The Secrets of Mega Evolution. You can get various Mega Stones from there, and mega-evolve a lot of Pokemon to fill the Pokedex. Getting Mega Shards is also very easy, as you can find them everywhere in Lumiose City.
Once you have a Gyaradosite, make Gyarados hold it. Now you just need to fill up the Mega Gauze with Mega Energy. If you are excited enough, then the fastest way to collect Mega Energy is by mining Mega Shards.
Should You Get Mega Gyarados in Legends ZA?
Gyarados is a dual-type Pokemon with Flying and Water, making it weak to Electric and Rock types. The typing changes to Dark and Water when Gyarados mega evolves, making it a bit weaker on paper in terms of typing. However, Gyarados already has a high Base Attack, and it increases even further with Mega Evolution.
You can also run a very flexible moveset on Gyarados for multiple coverage. We recommend using physical moves, such as Waterfall (STAB), Crunch (STAB), and any two hard-hitting Coverage moves (Dragon Rush, Earthquake, or Giga Impact).
Overall, Gyarados can be a very strong addition to your team if you lack a good Water and Dark Pokemon. But make sure that your team covers its weaknesses.

Mega Evolution in Legends ZA lasts as long as the Mega Gauge can support it.
Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Grass are the weaknesses of Mega Gyarados.
