How to Force Close Apps on the iPhone X

Unresponsive apps can be a real annoyance whether you’re working on your PC or your smartphone. However, force-closing and re-starting them almost always does the trick irrespective of the platform of your choice. On iOS, force closing apps used to be a relatively easy affair, requiring users to just double-click on the Home button and swiping away the misbehaving app. However, things changed with the introduction of the iPhone X, which doesn’t have the Home button, which is why Apple had to rethink many of the actions and gestures to interact with the device. Force closing apps is one such action that is done a bit differently on the iPhone X in the absence of the Home button, so in case you’re wondering how to go about it, here’s what you need to do:

How to Force Close Apps on the iPhone X

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and then swipe right in one seamless motion without lifting your finger to access the ‘App Switcher’ mode. Lift your finger from the screen only after the app cards appear, as seen in the clip below.

  • Press and hold any of the cards, and you’ll see a “-” (Minus) sign appear within a red bubble on the top left of every app card. You can now either tap on the red bubble or swipe up on a card to force close that app.

Use New Gesture controls to Force Close Apps on the iPhone X

That’s it, folks. It’s really easy to force close apps on the iPhone X, even without the physical Home button that had become a trademark for all iPhones over the past decade. While all the new gesture-based controls take a bit of getting used to, they are fairly intuitive once you get used to them, although, they may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
